K-pop girl group Aespa launches a fresh storyline and broadens sound with ‘Lemonade’ album, featuring G-Dragon, Ty Dolla $ign, and Becky G
Global K-pop sensation Aespa made their highly anticipated comeback on Thursday with the release of their second full-length album, “Lemonade.” This 11-track masterpiece not only expands the acclaimed girl group’s signature sound but also ushers in an exciting new chapter within their intricate fictional universe.
The “Lemonade” album introduces two dynamic lead singles: the vibrant title track “Lemonade” and the powerful prerelease single “WDA (Whole Different Animal).” Adding to the album’s allure are high-profile collaborations with industry giants G-Dragon, Ty Dolla $ign, and Becky G, promising a diverse musical experience for fans.
“These two tracks signify the exciting beginning of a new storyline for Aespa,” Karina shared during a press showcase in Seoul on Thursday. “While Aespa’s music is often described with a ‘metallic’ flair, this time we’ve infused a ‘sour’ yet refreshing flavor. We believe ‘Lemonade’ is an album perfectly crafted to make this summer feel even cooler and more exhilarating for our listeners.”
The Aespa members collectively highlighted the album’s genre-spanning tracklist as one of its most significant strengths, showcasing their versatility.
“As this is our second full-length studio album, our goal was to ensure each song showcased a distinct facet of Aespa,” Winter explained. “From potent and impactful tracks to witty and energetic compositions, we’ve curated an album where fans can experience Aespa’s diverse musicality in many captivating ways.”
“WDA” (Whole Different Animal) delves into a darker, more powerful side of the K-pop quartet. Karina elaborated on the track, describing it as a hip-hop-based dance anthem embodying a transcendent being, while also cleverly foreshadowing the highly anticipated third season of Aespa’s unique universe storyline.
This compelling track notably features a collaboration with global icon G-Dragon, a partnership Karina revealed had been envisioned right from the demo stage of the song’s development.
“When we first received the demo, we already had a specific featured artist in mind for that segment,” she shared. “The part G-Dragon contributed to was one we were particularly enthusiastic about, and his masterful execution brought it to life in such an exceptionally cool way, elevating the song even further.”
In stark contrast, the title track “Lemonade” embraces a lighter, more playful, and ultimately uplifting tone. Winter revealed that the song drew inspiration from the timeless adage about making lemonade when life presents challenges.
“It beautifully expresses the sentiment that no matter how perilous or perplexing a situation may seem, we possess the ability to conquer it in our own uniquely refreshing style,” she affirmed. “This is undeniably one of the songs that most brilliantly encapsulates Aespa’s signature sense of wit and empowering message.”

Karina further emphasized that the core message of “Lemonade” resonates with Aespa’s overarching desire to deliver unwavering positive energy to their audience.
“We symbolically refer to all the adversities and struggles that confront us as ‘lemons’,” she elaborated. “The profound message is that we should transform these challenges into delicious lemonade and bravely embrace them. Beyond any specific chart achievement, our deepest aspiration is for people to draw strength and inspiration from our music.”
Beyond the captivating title tracks, Aespa also shone a spotlight on several B-sides, each demonstrating the “Lemonade” album’s impressive wider musical range and the group’s artistic depth.
“Shakin'” stands out as one of the group’s quintessential “metallic” tracks, characterized by an utterly addictive hook and a bold, assertive message about profoundly impacting another person’s world. “Switchblade,” a track dynamically featuring Ty Dolla $ign, is an electrifying electro-dance composition that ingeniously compares a person’s remarkable adaptability to the versatile nature of a folding knife.
“It brilliantly embodies both flexibility and formidable strength simultaneously,” Winter remarked. “I felt that this perfectly aligned with Aespa’s distinct metallic charm and powerful concept.”
The “Lemonade” album also includes “Roll,” a track Ningning playfully described as having an infectious summery vibe and an irresistible charm.
“The lyrics cleverly intertwine cute yet fierce emotions directed toward a past lover, delivered in a wonderfully witty manner,” she shared, further noting that the Aespa members innovatively experimented with diverse vocal styles during the recording of this particular song.
A special digital-only version of “Lemonade” prominently featuring global superstar Becky G is included as the album’s eleventh and final track. Karina highlighted how Becky G’s powerful rap performance seamlessly blended with the Aespa members’ unique vocals, injecting a fresh and distinct energy into the composition.
Despite boldly venturing into a broader spectrum of sounds and genres, the Aespa members unanimously affirmed that preserving the group’s core identity remained a paramount priority throughout the meticulous album-making process.
“From our debut, we’ve established a strong universe and conceptual identity,” Giselle stated. “We meticulously collaborate with our company and A&R team when curating songs, striving to select tracks that authentically suit Aespa and perfectly complement our unique vocal tones as much as possible.”
Looking ahead, Aespa is poised to embark on their highly anticipated third world tour, “Synk : Complaexity,” kicking off in Seoul on August 7-8 before captivating audiences in cities across the globe. The acclaimed K-pop group is also diligently preparing for their performance at Lollapalooza Chicago later that same month, where Giselle tantalizingly hinted that fans can eagerly anticipate electrifying live performances of several brand-new songs from the “Lemonade” album.
