People spend their lives chasing success, hoping to reach something brighter. On that journey, there are moments when we wonder whether the light we are pursuing will truly illuminate our path, or whether it is too distant, merely an unattainable dream.

Singer and actor Danny Ahn described his latest stage role in the critically acclaimed play “At the Boundary of Light and Darkness” as a profound reflection on this very idea.

Exploring Obsession and Solitude in ‘At the Boundary of Light and Darkness’

The production, which concluded its run on Monday at the Sejong Center in Seoul, intricately weaves two parallel narratives across different time periods. It follows Kyung-min, a contemporary aspiring writer, and Thomas Edison in 1893, just before the monumental Chicago World’s Fair that would dramatically alter his life. Through their intertwined stories, the play delves into the human obsession with success throughout history and the profound solitude it often leaves in its wake.

Kyung-min, immersed in writing a novel about Edison, firmly believes that this story will be his key to success. In his manuscript, Edison meticulously plans to light up the Chicago World’s Fair with 100,000 bulbs, eagerly anticipating what he perceives as an imminent breakthrough.

Ahn, who embodies the character of Kyung-min, shared his insights: “Kyung-min and Edison grapple with the same kind of anguish. Edison, diligently preparing for the Chicago World’s Fair in pursuit of success through electric light, and Kyung-min, struggling to get his manuscript into an editor’s hands, are presented like mirror images of each other.”

Ironically, the dazzling digital billboards just outside Kyung-min’s cramped boarding room only serve to amplify the darkness of his personal struggles.

From G.O.D’s Harsh Trainee Days to Reflective Acting

For Ahn, now in his late 40s and boasting a highly successful career, vivid memories of his challenging K-pop trainee days proved instrumental in shaping his authentic portrayal of a struggling young man who persistently chases his dreams amidst dire circumstances.

“Performing this role brought back a flood of memories from my time as a trainee,” he recounted.

Danny Ahn debuted in 1999 as a member of g.o.d, the pioneering idol group produced by J. Y. Park and notable for featuring Bang Si-hyuk — now the chairman of Hybe — as a composer. The group swiftly rose to prominence, becoming one of Korea’s most beloved acts throughout the 2000s.

However, life as a 1990s K-pop trainee was notoriously harsh and financially strenuous. G.o.d’s early years are particularly remembered for being under-resourced, even by the demanding standards of first-generation idol groups.

“That memory is still so vivid I can recall it clearly,” Ahn said. “We lived almost in isolation for about two years in a remote mountain area near a military base. Water barely flowed in winter, and we often couldn’t eat properly. If something like that happened today, we’d probably sue someone.”

“But the one thing that kept us persevering was holding onto the dream of finally releasing an album. Kyung-min’s worries echo this sentiment: He’s endured 11 years but still questions whether he should continue or give up. I believe many people will deeply relate to that feeling of uncertainty.”

Navigating Life’s Uncharted ‘Road’ and Finding Comfort in Ambiguity

Ahn drew a poignant parallel to an iconic line from g.o.d’s hit song “Road” — “I don’t know where this road will lead me.”

“Even now, I am not entirely sure,” he admitted. “When I was young, I truly didn’t know either. I thought I would understand everything when I got older, but honestly, I still don’t have all the answers.”

Ahn recalled another impactful line from the play: “Brighter than expected, and darker than expected.”

“Life is inherently full of moments like that,” he reflected. “You anticipate something will be absolutely amazing once you finally achieve it, but when you actually do, it’s often just ‘so-so’.”

“The play beautifully suggests that within the boundary between light and darkness, there lies a small comfort that can become a kind of resting place for someone, and I sincerely hope audiences experience that solace,” he concluded.

Danny Ahn’s Future Endeavors and G.O.D’s 10,000-Day Milestone Celebration

Now celebrating his 28th year since debut, Danny Ahn expressed his aspiration to remain actively involved in both his singing and acting careers. If granted another opportunity on stage, he shared his interest in exploring classical works or challenging villain roles.

“It’s been 28 years with g.o.d,” he stated. “We each live our own lives now. Our primary job is to perform our work properly without troubling others and to live harmoniously with the people around us. When we gather for concerts, we draw immense energy from one another, then return to our individual lives, always promising to meet again and enjoy it once more.”

His beloved group, g.o.d, is set to commemorate their 10,000th day since debut with the special “Sky Blue Balloon Week” project at Everland in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, running from Thursday to Sunday. Alongside captivating performances, the event will feature an exclusive pop-up store, a commemorative exhibition, interactive experience zones, memorable photo spots, and engaging fan-participation content, among other exciting programs.
