Global K-pop sensation BTS took home the coveted “Song of the Summer” award at the 52nd American Music Awards on Monday. Their winning track, “Swim,” is the vibrant lead single from the group’s highly anticipated fifth studio album, “Arirang.”
This significant win marks a triumphant moment for the group, following their highly anticipated full-group comeback earlier this year after all seven members successfully completed their mandatory military service.
During their acceptance speech, BTS leader RM candidly spoke about the immense pressure the K-pop idols faced while crafting their first collaborative album in nearly four years.
“Thank you so much for giving all the love to ‘Swim,’” RM expressed passionately during the group’s acceptance speech. He continued, “When we made this album, we had a lot of pressure and we tried to figure out what music felt like us right now. The only thing we believed then was that we had to make music that felt most like us.”
Fellow member V also extended his gratitude to their dedicated fanbase, ARMY, while powerfully referencing the song’s central message of perseverance.
“To everyone out there who keeps swimming no matter what, we send you our love and support,” V shared, delivering an uplifting message. “So, keep swimming, no matter what.”
The K-pop phenomenon BTS triumphed over a formidable lineup of nominees in the highly competitive category, including global music icons Harry Styles and Taylor Swift.
Released in March, “Arirang” immediately achieved strong commercial success worldwide, with its lead track “Swim” quickly earning widespread global popularity. According to the prestigious Billboard’s Global Excl. US chart dated May 23, “Swim” remarkably topped the chart for the sixth time this year, simultaneously securing the No. 2 spot on Billboard’s “Global 200” chart.
Further solidifying its global appeal, “Arirang” also impressively placed No. 2 on Spotify’s Weekly Top Album Global chart. Meanwhile, “Swim” demonstrated its immense streaming power by landing at No. 4 on the music streaming platform’s Weekly Top Song Global chart.
Currently, BTS is captivating audiences worldwide with their monumental “Arirang” world tour, an extensive series of 85 concerts spanning 34 cities across the globe. The highly anticipated tour continues with upcoming concerts in Las Vegas on Wednesday and Thursday. Following these dates, the group will return to their home country, South Korea, for special concerts in Busan in June, celebrating their momentous 13th debut anniversary.
