K-pop sensation BTS is poised to potentially secure its second highly coveted Artist of the Year award at the American Music Awards (AMAs), with the prestigious ceremony unfolding in Las Vegas on Monday (US time).
This year, the iconic septet has garnered nominations across three significant categories, prominently featuring the flagship Artist of the Year award. They face formidable competition from global music titans including Bad Bunny, Bruno Mars, and Taylor Swift.
Fans eagerly anticipate BTS’s return to the American Music Awards stage at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. This marks their first attendance at the esteemed ceremony in five years, following their last appearance in 2021.
Beyond the top honor, the renowned K-pop band is also nominated for Best Male K-pop Artist and aims for Song of the Summer with “Swim,” the captivating lead track from their critically acclaimed fifth studio album, “Arirang.”
Should they clinch Artist of the Year, it would signify their second grand prize victory at the AMAs. Notably, in 2021, BTS etched their name in history by becoming the first Asian act to win the prestigious top award, ultimately sweeping three trophies. These included Favorite Duo or Group and Favorite Pop Song for their global megahit “Butter.”
The selection process for the 2026 AMAs nominees considers a comprehensive range of metrics, including streaming figures, album and digital sales, radio airplay, and touring revenue. However, the ultimate winners are decided entirely by passionate fan votes, highlighting the power of the global ARMY and other fanbases.
Further expanding K-pop’s presence, “Dracula” (remix), a captivating collaboration featuring BLACKPINK member Jennie and Australian acclaimed act Tame Impala, has also secured a nomination for Song of the Summer.
Rising US-based K-pop girl group Katseye has made a significant splash, earning three impressive nominations. These include New Artist of the Year and Breakthrough Pop Artist, with their track “Gnarly” also competing strongly for Best Music Video.
Even the entertainment realm sees K-pop influence, as the Netflix animated film “KPop Demon Hunters” received a nomination for Best Soundtrack. Additionally, “Golden,” performed by its fictional girl group Huntrix, was prominently shortlisted for Best Pop Song.
The fiercely contested Best Male K-pop Artist category sees BTS contending alongside fellow powerhouse groups Ateez, Enhypen, Stray Kids, and Tomorrow X Together. Meanwhile, the nominees for Best Female K-pop Artist showcase an impressive lineup, featuring aespa, BLACKPINK, ILLIT, Le Sserafim, and TWICE. (Yonhap)
