Hyundai Department Store Group announced a landmark achievement today, securing the prestigious top honor at the Association for Talent Development’s (ATD) 2026 Awards. This significant win marks the first time a Korean retailer has been recognized with such a distinction for its innovative approach to talent development.
The highly coveted ATD Awards celebrate organizations demonstrating world-class talent development systems that are not only globally benchmarked but also deeply integrated with their overarching corporate strategies.
Established in 1943, the Association for Talent Development stands as the world’s largest professional association dedicated to talent development, boasting a global membership of approximately 30,000 professionals. Its annual awards program is widely regarded as one of the talent development industry’s most prestigious accolades.
An official from Hyundai Department Store Group emphasized their strategic differentiator, stating, “We received strong recognition for treating talent development as a core business strategy rather than simply an employee training program.”
Reflecting this philosophy, the group has implemented comprehensive, customized training programs designed for its extensive workforce of approximately 14,000 employees. These programs are meticulously tailored based on individual rank, role, and career stage. Furthermore, Hyundai Department Store Group operates an innovative in-house “company university,” which has been a cornerstone of practical retail education since its inception in 1994, empowering over 1,700 graduates.
In response to the transformative impact of generative AI on the global business landscape, the company is proactively enhancing its data literacy and AI-focused training initiatives. These efforts aim to cultivate a highly tech-savvy workforce ready for future challenges. Notably, their proprietary AI mentor program, “Hai,” along with engaging web drama-style corporate education content, garnered specific praise for their innovative approach.
Demonstrating its deep expertise in human resource development, the Hyundai Department Store Group actively collaborates with academic institutions. This includes participation in Seoul National University’s pioneering interdisciplinary minor in retail studies – recognized as Korea’s first university-level retail specialization program.
Lee Dae-hee, head of the group’s Human Resources Development Institute, commented on the significance of the accolade, saying, “This award is meaningful because it recognizes the group’s unique philosophy and system for talent development.”
He further added, “We will continue building a future-oriented talent development system by expanding cooperation with educational and research institutions, ensuring our talent strategies remain at the forefront of industry innovation.”
