Tesla Dominates South Korean Imported Car Market Amid Soaring EV Demand in April
Tesla has firmly secured its position as the top player in the South Korean imported car market, maintaining the leading spot for the third consecutive month in April. This impressive performance, driven by robust electric vehicle (EV) demand and persistent high fuel prices, signifies a dynamic shift in the nation’s automotive landscape, as highlighted by recent industry data.
According to comprehensive figures released by the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association (KAIDA), new registrations for imported passenger vehicles reached 33,993 units across South Korea in April, reflecting a vibrant market.
The American EV powerhouse, Tesla, spearheaded the market with an exceptional 13,190 units sold, consistently holding its number one position since February. Following Tesla, prominent German luxury carmakers demonstrated strong market presence; BMW recorded 6,658 units, while Mercedes-Benz closely followed with 4,796 units, underscoring their enduring appeal in the competitive Korean market.
Further emphasizing the growing electric vehicle trend in South Korea, China’s leading EV manufacturer, BYD, achieved a notable fourth place with 2,023 units. This strong showing by BYD highlights the increasing adoption and popularity of electric vehicles within the premium Korean imported car sector.
Other esteemed brands also made significant contributions to the top rankings. Swedish luxury automaker Volvo Cars secured fifth place with 1,105 units. They were followed by Lexus, registering 1,079 units; Audi with 918 units; Toyota with 829 units; Mini with 696 units; and Porsche, a coveted luxury sports car brand, rounding out the top ten with 679 units.
Electric vehicles undeniably commanded a substantial share of the market in April. A significant 18,319 EVs were registered, accounting for an impressive 53.9 percent of all imported vehicle sales during the month, firmly establishing EVs as a dominant force in South Korea’s automotive import sector.
Analyzing specific model performance, the Tesla Model Y Premium emerged as the undisputed bestseller, recording an extraordinary 9,328 units sold. The Tesla Model 3 Premium Long Range also performed exceptionally well, securing second place with 1,481 units. The BMW 520 rounded out the top three bestselling imported models, achieving 1,191 units in April.
Jung Yoon-young, vice chair of KAIDA, provided insights into the market’s stability: “Sales figures remained consistent with the previous month, primarily attributed to the sustained robust demand for electric vehicles and strategic new model introductions by several key brands.” This ongoing trend underscores the dynamic and evolving landscape of South Korea’s imported car market.
