This marks the first time a South Korean company has been awarded such significant defense-related agreements, underscoring HD Hyundai’s growing influence in global maritime defense technology.
The formal signing ceremony took place at the ONR headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. Key attendees included Chang Kwang-pil, who leads the Future Technology Institute at HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, and ONR Director Rachel Riley, highlighting the high-level commitment to this strategic partnership.
These groundbreaking contracts mandate HD Hyundai to significantly enhance the operational performance of naval vessels through the integration of cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. This crucial work will be a collaborative effort, combining the expertise of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries with the academic rigor of Seoul National University’s Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, as confirmed by the company.
In a related development, the company also clinched a distinct contract aimed at boosting shipbuilding productivity.
