Korean Air has achieved a significant milestone in its aerospace manufacturing division, successfully delivering over 5,000 Sharklets. This remarkable accomplishment solidifies the company’s position as a leading global supplier of critical aircraft components.

A celebratory ceremony was held recently at the state-of-the-art Korean Air Tech Center in Busan, commemorating this achievement. The event saw the presence of key executives, including Yoo Jong-seok, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Safety Officer of Korean Air, and Benoit Schultz, Chief Procurement Officer at Airbus, underscoring the collaborative success.

Sharklets, the distinctive L-shaped wingtips found on Airbus A320 aircraft, play a crucial role in enhancing aerodynamic performance. By effectively minimizing wingtip vortices, these advanced components significantly reduce drag, leading to improved fuel efficiency and a considerable reduction in carbon emissions for airlines worldwide.

“Reaching 5,000 deliveries truly reflects Korean Air’s robust capabilities and our crucial role as a key partner in the dynamic global aerospace industry,” stated Yoo Jong-seok during the ceremony, highlighting the company’s expertise and dedication.

Korean Air embarked on its Sharklet production journey after triumphing in a highly competitive international bid in 2010, surpassing contenders from Japan, France, and Germany. Following the delivery of its inaugural unit in 2012, the company has consistently scaled up operations, now leveraging an advanced automated moving line to produce over 50 units monthly, showcasing impressive industrial efficiency.

During the ceremony, Korean Air extended its gratitude by presenting commemorative plaques to 15 esteemed partner companies, including Airbus, acknowledging their invaluable collaboration. Additionally, dedicated employees were recognized for their significant contributions to this ongoing success.

This pivotal milestone unequivocally highlights Korean Air’s strategic expansion beyond traditional aviation services into the lucrative sector of high-value aircraft component manufacturing. It aligns perfectly with the global aviation industry’s imperative drive for enhanced efficiency, cost savings, and a concerted reduction in environmental impact.
