Cortis RedRed: Return, Forging Identity

BigHit Music’s K-Pop Rookie Group Cortis Unveils Bolder, Self-Produced Sound with ‘RedRed’ Ahead of Second EP ‘GreenGreen’

BigHit Music’s highly anticipated K-pop rookie group, Cortis, made a striking comeback on Monday with their prerelease track “RedRed,” offering fans a captivating glimpse into the bolder, self-defined musical identity that will characterize their upcoming second EP, “GreenGreen.”

Often hailed as a “young creator crew,” the talented BigHit Music act, Cortis, continues to distinguish itself in the competitive K-pop landscape. This self-produced group meticulously participates in every facet of their artistry, from original songwriting and innovative choreography to immersive video direction, truly setting them apart from many typical rookie groups.

As a prominent boy group, Cortis debuted last year, following in the esteemed footsteps of senior BigHit Music acts BTS and Tomorrow X Together. They swiftly captured global attention with their impressive debut album, “Color Outside the Lines,” which notably soared onto the Billboard 200 chart and dominated music charts across 18 countries worldwide, solidifying Cortis’ position as a K-pop sensation.

With their highly anticipated second EP, aptly titled “GreenGreen,” Cortis emphasized a deliberate focus on encapsulating their unique “own identity” and a profound sense of “raw authenticity” within their new music.

“For this exciting Cortis comeback, we truly experimented and challenged ourselves in numerous ways to authentically narrate Cortis’ own story,” explained leader Martin during a special showcase event held in Seoul on Monday. He further elaborated, “We meticulously pushed the production process to its absolute final stage of mixing, ensuring we achieved the precise, desired sound for our fans.”

The powerful prerelease track, “RedRed,” creatively contrasts with the title of the upcoming full album, “GreenGreen.” Here, the conceptual use of “green” symbolizes what the innovative K-pop group Cortis embraces, while “red” signifies what they boldly reject. The song itself is a masterclass in experimental sound, built upon rough electronic textures, hypnotic repetitive beats, and instantly addictive chants. This dynamic track intentionally resists easy genre classification, instead prioritizing and emphasizing a distinct, raw sonic edge that defines Cortis’ artistic vision.

Cortis member James revealed that the profound lyrical concept behind “RedRed” originated from a surprisingly simple initial idea.

“As I was working on rhymes, the word ‘green’ came to mind, and then ‘red’ naturally emerged as its powerful opposite,” James elaborated. He continued, “Through this creative journey, we began systematically removing elements that simply didn’t resonate with Cortis’ authentic identity. This meticulous process proved invaluable in clarifying precisely what messages we, as Cortis, truly wanted to convey to our audience.”

The self-producing K-pop group Cortis articulates the core concept of their new track “RedRed” as “intentional rawness”—a meticulously carefully crafted yet strikingly unpolished aesthetic. This signature approach isn’t confined solely to the music; it extends seamlessly into their styling and visuals, characterized by minimal makeup and a refreshingly natural presentation.

Echoing the successful strategy of their debut, the Cortis team once again developed their anticipated new album, “GreenGreen,” through an intensive and collaborative songwriting camp held in vibrant Los Angeles.

“To achieve a truly unique sonic texture, we meticulously layered sounds, incorporating instruments that Cortis had never explored previously,” member James explained. He further detailed the intense creative process, stating, “We also painstakingly crafted six to seven distinct versions of melodies and beats, ensuring every element contributed to our signature sound.”

The compelling, self-produced music video for Cortis’ “RedRed” brilliantly highlights authentic urban Korean backdrops. Iconic locations like Nakwon Arcade and the charming old neighborhood streets of Seoul serve to powerfully reinforce the track’s inherent grittiness and raw aesthetic. With an impressive scale, featuring more than 500 extras, the visually rich video skillfully blends vintage styling with a casual, almost documentary-like mood, offering a unique perspective on Korean youth culture.

“We intuitively felt that the rough, experimental texture of the ‘RedRed’ song would resonate perfectly with the character of Korea’s older, more traditional streets,” Cortis leader Martin elaborated, thoughtfully explaining the conceptual vision behind the compelling music video.

Cortis member Juhoon shared that this significant new release, “RedRed,” clearly marks a strategic shift in creative focus compared to the group’s initial debut.

“While our first album aimed to make a powerful and strong initial impression through its sound, this new project, ‘GreenGreen,’ is decidedly more focused on the pure enjoyment of performing on stage,” Juhoon stated. He emphasized, “Ultimately, this work much more clearly reflects the distinct taste and elevated standards that define Cortis as artists.”

The highly anticipated prerelease track “RedRed” officially launched at 6 p.m. KST on Monday, building excitement for the full album, “GreenGreen,” which is slated for a global release on May 4.
