Seerslab CEO Michael Chong Champions Wearability for AI Smart Glasses Adoption, Not Disruption

Seerslab CEO Michael Chong (Seerslab)

AI-powered smart glasses are rapidly moving from niche technology to mainstream adoption, yet not every innovator aims to entirely replace the ubiquitous smartphone.

“We didn’t initially set out with the ambition to displace smartphones,” explained Michael Chong, Chief Executive of Seerslab, in a recent interview with The Korea Herald in Seoul. “Our core objective was to explore how artificial intelligence could seamlessly integrate into daily life, much like a conventional pair of glasses.”

During a compelling demonstration, Seerslab’s innovative AI smart glasses flawlessly identified ingredients on a table and instantly suggested recipes through simple voice commands. This offered a clear vision of how practical AI applications can effortlessly enhance everyday routines.

While global tech giants and prominent Chinese manufacturers intensely compete to position smart glasses as the next major computing platform, Seerslab is carving a distinct path. Their strategy prioritizes genuine usability and seamless integration over disruptive technological overhauls.

This philosophy, centered on user-centric design and practical utility, is the foundation of AInoon, Seerslab’s advanced AI-powered smart glasses. Unlike many competing devices that aspire to supplant smartphones, AInoon is engineered to complement existing mobile devices and is specifically designed for comfortable, all-day wear.

“Many major corporations are focused on creating smartphone replacements,” Chong noted. “That is not our objective.”

This fundamental distinction profoundly influences how Seerslab approaches both product development and market positioning. Rather than banking on a single, revolutionary breakthrough, the company emphasizes gradual adoption and how users can naturally integrate these smart wearable devices into their existing habits and lifestyles.

“Before it’s a piece of tech, it’s eyewear,” Chong elaborated, drawing a parallel between smart glasses and fashion accessories rather than pure electronics. He suggests that the market will likely diversify across various price points, styles, and specific use cases, rather than converging on one dominant product.

Despite this nuanced approach, the broader smart glasses market is experiencing accelerated growth.

Meta currently commands over 70 percent of the global market share. Meanwhile, Chinese manufacturers such as Xreal, Xiaomi, RayNeo, and Viture are aggressively expanding their presence, leveraging their robust manufacturing capabilities and competitive pricing strategies.

Industry projections forecast global smart glasses shipments to reach an impressive 22.67 million units this year, representing an increase of over 50 percent year-on-year. Chinese firms are anticipated to account for nearly half of these shipments, bolstered by government subsidies and a highly efficient manufacturing ecosystem that enables rapid concept-to-production cycles.

Seerslab’s AInoon, priced at 395,000 won (approximately $269), is strategically positioned above entry-level alternatives but remains accessible to mainstream consumers. Its deep integration with popular local Korean platforms, including Kakao services and navigation apps, underscores Seerslab’s commitment to practical, everyday usability within the Korean market.

Seerslab’s strategic direction is deeply rooted in its origins.

The company initially built its expertise in augmented reality, developing sophisticated vision-based AI technologies that were widely adopted in mobile applications and global platforms, reaching tens of millions of users. Their early work also included innovative collaborations with entertainment companies, notably in K-pop.

As large technology platforms began to internalize these capabilities, a shift further accelerated by generative AI, the market for Seerslab’s original offerings narrowed. This prompted Seerslab to pivot into hardware development, yet they steadfastly maintained their unwavering focus on exceptional user experience.

“Hardware alone does not create intrinsic value,” Chong asserted. “The true value lies in the services, the compelling content, and the robust ecosystem that surrounds the device.”

In line with this vision, Seerslab has developed essential software tools for third-party developers and is actively expanding integration with widely used services. This enables users to effortlessly check messages, navigate, or search for nearby information directly through their smart glasses, eliminating the need to constantly retrieve their smartphones.

Despite the rapid market expansion, the smart glasses category is undeniably still in its nascent stages.

Significant technical hurdles persist, including limitations in battery life, heat management, device weight, and viewing angles. Furthermore, most smart devices still rely heavily on smartphones for core functionality, and many current use cases merely duplicate existing mobile features.

Privacy also remains a paramount concern. “These sophisticated devices possess the capability to record what you see and what you hear,” Chong cautioned, highlighting potential risks related to both personal and corporate data security.

Seerslab encountered such design and commercialization constraints early in its journey. Their initial efforts with display-based augmented reality glasses proved challenging to bring to market due to prohibitively high costs, restrictive battery limitations, and complex issues surrounding prescription lens integration.

Responding to these challenges, the company significantly refined and simplified its approach. AInoon now weighs approximately 30 grams, making it comparable to conventional eyewear, with a design meticulously engineered for long-term comfort and wearability.

“Our ultimate goal is to create a device that people can comfortably wear continuously throughout their day,” Chong emphasized.

While the definitive direction of the smart glasses industry remains fluid, Seerslab is framing the fundamental question differently. Instead of solely exploring the technological limits of what’s possible, they are concentrating on how seamlessly this advanced technology can genuinely integrate into the fabric of daily life.

“Technology should not feel like a separate entity,” Chong concluded. “It should simply blend in, becoming an intuitive extension of ourselves.”
