KT Corp. is significantly advancing its expertise in AI transformation (AX) by training a specialized workforce of Forward-Deployed Engineers (FDEs). This strategic initiative, in collaboration with leading US artificial intelligence software company Palantir Technologies, aims to vigorously expand KT’s business-to-business (B2B) AI transformation services across various industries.
“AI transformation extends beyond mere adoption; it’s about actively deploying AI solutions in real-world scenarios to tackle complex problems effectively,” emphasized Byun Woo-chul, Senior Vice President of the P-FDE department within the AX engineering unit at KT’s AX business division, during a recent online briefing. This highlights KT’s commitment to practical, impactful AI application.
KT’s Forward-Deployed Engineers (FDEs) are uniquely positioned to work directly with clients. They deeply engage to understand specific business processes, critical data, and organizational culture. Their involvement spans the entire project lifecycle, from defining the core problem and developing innovative solutions to seamless implementation and rigorous performance assessment.
This innovative FDE model distinguishes itself from traditional systems integration projects, which often focus on delivering a predetermined system within a set timeframe. KT’s FDE-led initiatives are instead evaluated by tangible, measurable outcomes, such as achieved reductions in inventory levels or marked improvements in demand forecasting accuracy, driving real business value.
The prominent telecom operator has meticulously defined four core competencies for its elite FDEs: expertly structuring diverse business problems, designing advanced ontologies, building robust AI applications, and ultimately delivering exceptional customer value. To further standardize excellence, KT has also compiled an operational playbook detailing 27 specific skills honed through extensive internal projects.
KT recently demonstrated its practical approach through the “Agent Camp,” an intensive in-house AI hackathon. This event, held from Monday through Wednesday at KT’s headquarters in Bundang, Gyeonggi Province, served as a vital proving ground for its FDE methodology.
The Agent Camp program was thoughtfully adapted from Palantir’s highly regarded AIP Bootcamp, a global offering since February 2024. KT successfully compressed the comprehensive course, typically spanning two to three weeks, into an efficient three-day format, maximizing learning and application.
Participants at the hackathon tackled three critical projects directly relevant to KT’s core business operations: developing an advanced AI agent for comprehensive network security monitoring, crafting an intelligent agent for optimizing energy consumption, and creating a sophisticated data-for-AI agent.
Leveraging Palantir Foundry, Palantir’s powerful data integration platform, alongside its cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence Platform, participants collaboratively built sophisticated ontologies. These ontologies effectively link operational data with crucial business processes, creating shared semantic models. This advanced capability allows AI agents to intuitively grasp the underlying context of data, facilitating informed decisions and proactive actions, moving beyond simple information retrieval.
Looking ahead, KT is set to strategically expand its FDE-led AI transformation projects. This expansion will be driven by agile, squad-based teams comprising specialists from various disciplines, ensuring comprehensive and innovative solutions for clients.
KT views its unique dual position as both a significant Palantir customer and a strategic partner in the Korean market as a distinct competitive advantage. By rigorously applying Palantir’s cutting-edge technology to its own extensive operations, KT effectively trains its engineers on authentic business cases, building invaluable expertise before deploying these proven solutions to its corporate clients.
While KT has not disclosed the exact size of its FDE workforce, the company proudly states that it operates the largest such organization in Korea. Furthermore, KT boasts more Palantir-certified engineers than any other domestic company, underscoring its leadership in AI expertise.
