LG Energy Solution is poised to supply its advanced battery systems for Google’s most extensive solar and energy storage project to date. This strategic move further solidifies the Korean battery maker’s vital role in developing robust power infrastructure, particularly as demand from AI data centers continues to surge, industry sources reported on Wednesday.

Google and leading renewable energy developer Cypress Creek Energy recently unveiled the Steel River Energy Center in Arkansas. This ambitious project will initially combine 1.6 gigawatts (GW) of solar generation with approximately 2 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery energy storage. Plans project an expansion to 2.5 GW of solar capacity and 2.9 GWh of energy storage by 2029.

For this landmark initiative, LG Energy Solution is slated to provide its North America-manufactured JF2 DC Link system, which incorporates high-performance lithium iron phosphate batteries. Industry experts estimate the value of this significant order to be several hundred billion won.

To power its expanding data center operations and achieve its ambitious clean energy targets, Google has committed to purchasing all electricity generated during the initial phases of the project through a long-term virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA).

Once operational, the Steel River Energy Center will become the largest solar and battery storage facility within Google’s global portfolio. It is projected to generate sufficient clean electricity to power more than 315,000 homes annually.

Major technology companies are intensely focused on securing reliable and substantial power supplies for their rapidly expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure. BloombergNEF data indicates that Google’s electricity consumption increased by 37 percent last year, with Microsoft experiencing a 24 percent rise.

Collectively, Google, Meta, Amazon, and Microsoft accounted for an impressive 49 percent of global corporate renewable energy purchase agreements last year. This highlights their profound influence and increasing involvement in large-scale clean energy development worldwide.

This new agreement represents another significant success for LG Energy Solution, following a prior deal secured in May for a data center-related project with US utility DTE Energy. It further establishes the Korean battery powerhouse as a key player in the evolving AI-driven energy infrastructure landscape.

The agreement also underscores the critical strategic advantage of LG Energy Solution’s robust North American manufacturing base, especially as the United States implements stricter policies on supply chains, aiming to reduce dependencies on sources linked to China.

Both Google and Cypress Creek confirmed that essential equipment for the Steel River Energy Center, including batteries, solar panels, and structural steel, would be sourced exclusively through North American supply chains. Specifically, the project will utilize solar modules from First Solar and locally sourced steel, reinforcing regional economic impact.

LG Energy Solution currently operates energy storage battery production facilities at four strategic locations across North America: Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee, and Canada. The company plans to commence additional ESS battery production at its Lansing, Michigan, plant later this year.

Looking ahead, LG Energy Solution aims to significantly expand its global ESS production capacity to exceed 60 GWh by the end of the year, with a substantial portion – over 50 GWh – dedicated to its North American operations.
