BGF Retail, the operator of South Korea’s leading convenience store chain CU, has officially announced a strategic partnership with cutting-edge AI startup Intellicia. This significant collaboration, formalized through a memorandum of understanding signed on Wednesday, aims to accelerate AI-driven innovation across all facets of CU’s extensive retail operations, promising enhanced efficiency and a superior customer experience.

Central to this landmark agreement is the integration of Intellicia’s innovative AI synthetic consumer technology and its powerful AI-powered store digital twin platform, ParaStore. By leveraging these advanced artificial intelligence solutions, BGF Retail seeks to unlock deeper consumer insights, optimize product planning, enhance merchandising strategies, and streamline overall store operations for the popular CU brand.

The important signing ceremony took place on Tuesday at BGF Retail’s corporate headquarters in Seoul. Key leaders present included Lee Eun-kwan, Head of BGF Retail’s Customer Experience (CX) Division, and Intellicia CEO Baek Seung-kook, underscoring the strategic importance of this new AI partnership for both companies.

Intellicia’s proprietary AI synthetic consumer technology is designed to create millions of virtual consumers, enabling comprehensive analysis of preferences, purchasing behavior, and price sensitivity. This sophisticated AI empowers BGF Retail to precisely identify optimal pricing models and effective product strategies for CU’s diverse offerings. A significant advantage is its ability to deliver actionable market insights rapidly, often within days, dramatically reducing the time and cost traditionally associated with conventional consumer surveys.

Furthermore, the partners will leverage Intellicia’s ParaStore platform to develop detailed virtual CU stores. This innovative digital twin technology allows BGF Retail to accurately simulate various scenarios, including optimal product placement, customer flow analysis, and dynamic merchandising strategies, all before deploying any changes to physical CU convenience store locations, ensuring maximized effectiveness.

Demonstrating immediate value, BGF Retail and Intellicia have already successfully tested the technology. A recent proof-of-concept project conducted in May utilized the AI synthetic consumer to meticulously analyze how shoppers prioritize taste versus health considerations when selecting convenience store lunchboxes. The resulting critical insights were directly applied to enhance CU’s product planning and menu development efforts, proving the technology’s tangible effectiveness.

Reflecting on the future of retail, Lee Eun-kwan stated, “Our vision is to harness AI not just for analyzing current purchasing patterns, but critically, to predict what future customers will truly value.” He further emphasized, “CU is committed to continuously innovating products and services that precisely reflect evolving consumer needs, thereby delivering an unparalleled and forward-thinking retail experience across our convenience stores.”
