Samsung Electronics Co. is accelerating the launch of its initial semiconductor fabrication plant within the Yongin chip cluster, aiming to begin operations by 2029 – a significant one to two years ahead of its original schedule, industry sources reported Sunday.
This expedited timeline is driven by the South Korean government’s intensified efforts in developing the Yongin National Industrial Complex. This vital national strategic project is envisioned to become Samsung’s next-generation hub for advanced semiconductor manufacturing, crucial for global tech supply chains.
Samsung currently intends to kick off operations in 2029 at the first of six planned high-tech semiconductor production facilities located within the vast Yongin industrial complex, strategically positioned just south of Seoul, as per the sources.
“An earlier start of operations at this pioneering plant will empower Samsung to respond more quickly and effectively to the rapidly growing global demand for artificial intelligence (AI) chips,” an industry official commented, underscoring the strategic importance of this accelerated development.
