Leading semiconductor powerhouse SK hynix officially commenced its journey in the US stock market on Friday, marked by an esteemed opening-bell ceremony at Nasdaq. This monumental event establishes a pivotal new gateway for global investors, following the successful completion of a record-setting $26.5 billion share offering, which now stands as the largest US share offering ever by a foreign company.
The prestigious ceremony, held at the Nasdaq MarketSite in the heart of New York’s Times Square, was attended by SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won, SK hynix CEO Kwak Noh-jung, and other distinguished senior executives, signaling a transformative moment for the prominent chipmaker.
SK hynix’s American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) initiated trading on a when-issued basis under the temporary ticker SKHYV. While the initial transaction prices and trading volumes were not immediately disclosed, regular-way trading, under the permanent ticker SKHY, is scheduled to begin on Monday, promising broader access to this key player in the global semiconductor industry.
SK hynix CEO Kwak Noh-jung underscored the profound significance of the Nasdaq listing, calling it a “truly historic day.” He reflected on the company’s remarkable trajectory, tracing its evolution from financial challenges a quarter-century ago to its current strategic position at the epicenter of the accelerating artificial intelligence (AI) boom.
“AI will be everywhere, and wherever AI goes, SK hynix will be there,” Kwak confidently stated, emphasizing the company’s indispensable role in shaping the future of technology and computing.
This strategic US listing is anticipated to forge stronger relationships for SK hynix with the customers, partners, and top-tier talent driving the next wave of computing innovation. Furthermore, it crucially simplifies the investment process for global investors who previously encountered practical obstacles when seeking to purchase its Seoul-listed shares.
“For many global investors, investing in SK hynix has not always been simple,” Kwak elaborated. “Our ADR listing makes that access easier, effectively bridging the gap for international market participation.”

In this landmark offering, SK hynix successfully issued 177.9 million ADRs, each priced at $149. Notably, every 10 receipts collectively represent one common share traded on the Seoul stock exchange. This pricing represented an approximately 2.9 percent premium over the company’s Thursday closing price in Korea, a rare occurrence for a major equity offering of this scale.
Investor demand for SK hynix’s US Initial Public Offering (IPO) proved exceptionally robust. Orders received during the book-building process reportedly surpassed the available shares by over seven times, as indicated by Bloomberg. This groundbreaking deal significantly outpaced Alibaba’s $25 billion New York listing in 2014, solidifying SK hynix’s offering as the largest US share offering by a foreign company in history.
However, the Nasdaq debut unfolds during a dynamic and somewhat uncertain period for semiconductor stocks globally. SK hynix’s Seoul shares have recently experienced a decline of approximately 25 percent from their peak two weeks prior, as investors cautiously reassess the pace and ultimate returns from extensive investments in AI infrastructure.
On Friday, the stock initially saw a surge of more than 5 percent, reaching an intraday high of 2.305 million won, before reversing course. It eventually closed 0.27 percent lower at 2.18 million won as some investors opted to secure profits.
This slight dip in SK hynix shares contrasted with a broader positive rally observed among other Korean chip stocks. Samsung Electronics, for instance, gained 2.52 percent, while the Kospi index also advanced by 2.52 percent, bolstered by the strong performance of US semiconductor stocks overnight.
The introduction of trading in New York will provide investors with the first direct benchmark for how SK hynix is valued alongside its US-listed chipmaker counterparts. Despite its established leadership in cutting-edge high-bandwidth memory (HBM) technology, the company has historically traded at a lower earnings multiple compared to its US rival, Micron Technology.
These newly available ADRs empower investors to acquire dollar-denominated exposure to SK hynix directly through their US brokerage accounts. The sustainability of any premium these ADRs develop over the Korean shares will hinge partly on the robust strength of US investor demand and the ease with which these two distinct securities can be converted into each other.
Looking ahead, SK hynix has clear plans to strategically allocate the significant proceeds from this offering to expand its production capabilities within Korea. Key initiatives include the development of its inaugural fabrication plant at the Yongin semiconductor cluster and the establishment of an advanced packaging facility in Cheongju, reinforcing its unwavering commitment to innovation and future growth.
Kwak reiterated that the company’s upcoming chapter would be firmly guided by its core principles of trust, relentless innovation, and sustainable growth.
“Leadership is not merely a title,” he concluded. “It is a distinction we must tirelessly earn every single day through our actions, advancements, and commitment to excellence.”
The record-breaking offering is anticipated to officially conclude on Tuesday, with the underlying new common shares expected to be listed in Seoul around July 29.
