Mirae Asset Financial Group, a leading South Korean financial institution, announced on Thursday that its significant acquisition of local cryptocurrency exchange Korbit has received crucial regulatory approval from the country’s antitrust watchdog. This landmark clearance empowers the group to substantially bolster its capabilities and footprint within the rapidly expanding digital asset market.
In a strategic move unveiled in February, Mirae Asset Consulting, an influential affiliate of the group, agreed to acquire a commanding 92.06 percent stake in Korbit. The deal, valued at 133.5 billion won (approximately $88.8 million USD), highlights Mirae Asset’s commitment to securing robust new growth drivers within the dynamic digital asset sector. Notably, this transaction marks a historic milestone as the first acquisition of a cryptocurrency exchange by a major financial group in South Korea.
The Fair Trade Commission (FTC) meticulously reviewed the acquisition, ultimately granting its approval after determining that the transaction was unlikely to significantly diminish competition within the relevant digital asset market. This regulatory decision provides essential clarity for the future operations of both entities.
The FTC’s favorable decision was largely influenced by Korbit’s relatively limited market presence. Last year, the exchange accounted for a modest 0.5 percent of the total trading volume, positioning it far behind industry leader Upbit, which commanded a dominant 69 percent share, followed by Bithumb with 28 percent. Korbit is one of South Korea’s five licensed won-based cryptocurrency exchanges.
Considering the strong retail investor-driven nature of Korea’s cryptocurrency market, where trading liquidity is often prioritized over transaction fees, the FTC concluded that Korbit’s existing level of liquidity was too constrained for the acquisition to exert a meaningful impact on the broader market competition or consumer choice.
Despite Korbit’s current modest market share, Mirae Asset views this acquisition as a pivotal strategic maneuver to firmly establish its foothold and accelerate its ambitions in the global digital asset market. The prominent financial group outlined plans to seamlessly integrate its extensive global investment expertise in securities and asset management with Korbit’s advanced digital asset infrastructure and technological capabilities.
“This acquisition represents a bold step in Mirae Asset’s ongoing commitment to innovate and blur the traditional boundaries between conventional and digital assets,” stated the group. “Our goal is to construct a new, integrated financial infrastructure that effectively connects and enhances the global investment ecosystem for a diverse range of clients.”
As South Korea progresses with new digital asset-related legislation and prepares for the introduction of security token offerings (STOs), Mirae Asset plans to progressively roll out a comprehensive suite of cutting-edge digital financial services. These initiatives will encompass stablecoins, institutional-grade custody solutions, real-world asset tokenization, and advanced digital payment systems, positioning the group at the forefront of fintech innovation.
Furthermore, the group intends to significantly expand its institutional services, particularly as Korea’s digital asset market gradually opens to broader institutional participation. This expansion will include offering specialized research, insightful investment guidance, secure custody services, robust security protocols, and comprehensive operational support tailored for institutional clients.
Mirae Asset also emphasized that Korbit will serve as a foundational pillar for its ambitious global expansion strategy. The group’s overarching vision is to construct a unified investment ecosystem, enabling both domestic and international clients to effortlessly access and manage a diverse portfolio of traditional and digital assets across borders, all within a single, intuitive platform.
“Digital assets are no longer merely a short-term speculative investment vehicle for a niche group of investors; they have unequivocally emerged as a legitimate and significant new asset class within the global financial industry,” a Mirae Asset official affirmed.
“By synergizing Korbit’s innovative digital asset trading infrastructure with Mirae Asset’s established strengths in stringent risk management, robust internal controls, and unwavering investor protection, we are poised to set new benchmarks for the global asset management industry and actively contribute to cultivating a more trusted and resilient digital asset ecosystem, both in Korea and beyond.”
