The second half of the year ushers foldable smartphones into the spotlight, becoming the epicenter of the premium handset competition. Tech giants Samsung Electronics, Google, and Apple are all gearing up for significant product launches poised to redefine the market landscape.

Samsung Electronics is slated to host its highly anticipated Galaxy Unpacked event in London on July 22. Industry sources confirm expectations that this event will feature the grand unveiling of its next-generation foldable lineup, prominently showcasing the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Flip8.

Significant attention is also converging on whether Samsung will debut a novel, wider foldable model, thereby expanding its current portfolio beyond the familiar book-style Fold and clamshell Flip designs.

Speculation surrounding new form factors intensified following a recent Samsung video. The clip depicted a long, Galaxy Z Fold-like device being meticulously torn along a perforated line, subsequently unfolding into a notably wider configuration.

The intriguing event tagline, “A New Shape Unfolds,” has further ignited expectations that Samsung is indeed poised to introduce a groundbreaking new foldable form factor.

Prior to the official launch, Roh Tae-moon, Samsung Electronics’ co-CEO and head of the Device eXperience division, connected the upcoming Galaxy Z series more intrinsically with mobile AI in a Samsung Newsroom publication.

“As AI assists us with more tasks simultaneously, a screen that flexes and folds inherently expands the realm of possibilities,” Roh highlighted. He further emphasized, “This is the unique appeal of foldables: they elegantly fold into your hand or dramatically open up a larger stage for interaction.”

Samsung aims to strategically position its new Galaxy Z lineup as more than just a hardware refresh. Instead, it will be presented as an advanced AI-powered productivity platform, meticulously engineered for seamless multitasking and immersive large-screen experiences.

Meanwhile, Google is also intensifying its foray into the foldable market. The prominent U.S. tech giant has scheduled its ‘Made by Google’ event for August 12, where industry observers anticipate the unveiling of the Pixel 11 series, specifically featuring the highly anticipated Pixel 11 Pro Fold.

Recent leaked renders indicate that the upcoming Pixel 11 lineup will boast notably slimmer bezels and a more refined, thinner design. Speculation suggests the Pixel 11 Pro Fold could measure approximately 10.1 millimeters when folded and a mere 4.8 millimeters when unfolded.

Apple continues to be regarded as the most significant potential disruptor in the foldable smartphone arena. The Cupertino giant is broadly anticipated to reveal its inaugural foldable iPhone, launching concurrently with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max at its September event. However, some reports hint that the standard iPhone 18’s release might be deferred until spring 2027.

Apple’s pioneering foldable iPhone is widely projected to feature a book-style design, echoing Samsung’s established Galaxy Z Fold series. This design is expected to include a 5.5-inch outer display paired with a spacious 7.8-inch inner display. Should it launch as anticipated, this device will undoubtedly face direct comparison with Samsung’s rumored wider foldable model.

Pricing strategies are unequivocally emerging as a critical battleground in this intensifying foldable market.

Samsung is anticipated to maintain the Galaxy Z Fold8’s price point around the formidable $2,000 mark. In contrast, Google’s Pixel 11 Pro Fold is rumored to commence at a more accessible $1,800. Apple’s inaugural foldable iPhone, however, is projected to command a premium, debuting between $2,300 and $2,500, which could position it as the most expensive mainstream foldable smartphone upon its release.

Industry sources indicate that these distinct pricing variations underscore each company’s unique strategic approach. Samsung, for instance, is leveraging its extensive years of foldable expertise. Google is prioritizing and emphasizing its cutting-edge AI capabilities, while Apple aims to command a significant premium for its highly anticipated debut in this emerging category.

The impending arrival of Apple into the foldable market could signify a pivotal turning point for an ecosystem predominantly shaped by Samsung and various Chinese smartphone manufacturers. This entry is expected to further propel foldables squarely into the premium mainstream segment.

Data from Counterpoint Research forecasts a robust growth in global foldable smartphone panel shipments, projecting a 24 percent year-on-year increase to reach 27.5 million units this year. Concurrently, revenue is anticipated to experience a significant surge of 48 percent, climbing to approximately $4.4 billion.

Counterpoint’s analysis indicates that last year, Samsung commanded a dominant 40 percent share of the global foldable smartphone market, followed by Huawei at 30 percent and Motorola with 12 percent. However, for the current year, Samsung’s market share is predicted to see a reduction to 31 percent, while Apple is projected to swiftly capture a substantial 28 percent, with Huawei holding 23 percent.
