South Korean Equities See Steep Decline Amid Tech Sector Woes

Seoul’s benchmark stock market experienced a dramatic downturn on Tuesday, with shares plummeting nearly 5 percent. The significant drop was largely driven by an extended rout in technology stocks following Samsung Electronics Co.’s release of its preliminary second-quarter earnings estimate. Concurrently, the South Korean won depreciated against the US dollar, reflecting broader market anxiety.

KOSPI Plunges as Trading Volume Surges

After an initial dip of 1.6 percent at market open, the Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) intensified its losses throughout the day. The index ultimately shed 395.02 points, marking a 4.91 percent decline to close at 7,656.31. Trading activity was robust, with a substantial 512.29 million shares exchanging hands, valued at 39.66 trillion won ($25.9 billion). Market breadth was decidedly negative, as declining stocks outnumbered gainers by a margin of 509 to 358.

Institutional and foreign investors were net sellers, offloading 309.1 billion won and 2.92 trillion won worth of stocks, respectively. Conversely, individual investors stepped in, purchasing a net 3.13 trillion won in equities.

Technology Sector Leads Market Correction Despite Strong Earnings

The technology sector bore the brunt of the sell-off, with major tech stocks plunging on profit-taking. This came despite Samsung Electronics estimating its operating profit for the April-June period at an impressive 89.4 trillion won, a figure that surpassed previous market forecasts. Analysts suggest investors are now scrutinizing whether escalating capital spending, fierce competition, and expanding production capacity will sufficiently drive the earnings growth needed to justify the high valuations of these technology giants.

Key Stock Movements Across Industries

In Seoul, leading technology firms spearheaded the market’s downturn:

  • Market bellwether Samsung Electronics saw its shares plunge by 6.92 percent, closing at 296,000 won.
  • Chip manufacturing giant SK hynix declined 6.06 percent to 2,201,000 won, ahead of its anticipated US$29 billion US listing later this week.

Beyond tech, other prominent companies also faced headwinds:

  • Top carmaker Hyundai Motor dropped 4.48 percent to 479,000 won.
  • Defense contractor Hanwha Aerospace shed 3.19 percent, ending at 1,122,000 won.
  • Hanwha Ocean experienced a steep decline of 22.65 percent to 89,800 won, following news that a South Korean consortium, which included the shipbuilder, was unsuccessful in winning Canada’s multibillion-dollar submarine procurement project.

Amidst the widespread losses, a few companies managed to buck the trend:

  • Cosmetics producer Amorepacific rose 4.2 percent to 126,500 won.
  • Leading refiner SK Innovation climbed 7.56 percent, reaching 103,800 won.

Korean Won Weakens Against US Dollar

The Korean won concluded the trading session weaker against the US dollar. As of 3:30 p.m., the currency was trading at 1,528.20 won per US dollar, reflecting a 2.1 won decrease from the previous session’s close.
