Korea Zinc Chairman Choi Yun-birm recently engaged in crucial discussions with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, focusing on bolstering strategic cooperation across critical mineral supply chains. The high-level meeting underscores the deepening partnership between Korea Zinc and Australia in vital global industries.

During their significant meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office in Canberra, Australia, both leaders committed to enhancing dialogue and collaboration. Their agenda included advancing critical minerals value chains, reinforcing supply chain resilience, and jointly exploring innovative new avenues for partnership in this essential sector.

Addressing the challenges within Australia’s domestic smelting industry, Prime Minister Albanese specifically commended Korea Zinc’s Sun Metals Corp. (SMC) for its sustained profitability. He highlighted SMC’s operational longevity since 1996 as a testament to its alignment with the Australian government’s key industrial and energy priorities. Albanese further noted that Korea Zinc’s significant investments in advanced smelting technologies, renewable energy initiatives, and green hydrogen production perfectly complement Australia’s “Future Made in Australia” industrial policy, which is geared towards achieving net-zero emissions.

Discussions also extended to “Project Crucible,” Korea Zinc’s ambitious plan for a critical minerals smelter in Tennessee, USA. This groundbreaking project, developed in collaboration with the US government, is designed to significantly fortify America’s critical mineral supply chains and decrease its reliance on foreign processing facilities, enhancing global supply chain security.

Chairman Choi emphasized that Project Crucible exemplifies how combining specialized technological expertise with robust governmental support can effectively strengthen critical supply chain security. Prime Minister Albanese recognized the project’s potential as a compelling model for Australia, expressing keen interest in further discussions to overcome the specific hurdles currently faced by Australia’s own smelting sector.

Korea Zinc has maintained a strong operational presence in Australia through SMC since 1996. Over nearly three decades, the company has strategically expanded its Australian business ventures into renewable energy generation and green hydrogen production, which are fundamental pillars of Chairman Choi’s “Troika Drive” growth strategy, initially unveiled in 2022.

Underscoring the nearly three decades of a successful and enduring partnership with Australia, Chairman Choi Yun-birm affirmed, “Australia’s abundant natural resources, synergized with Korea Zinc’s advanced technological prowess and diversified business portfolio, are set to continue generating powerful and mutually beneficial synergies for years to come.”
