LS Cable & System, a global leader in cable manufacturing, announced a significant milestone today as its U.S. subsidiary, LS GreenLink, officially commenced construction of a vertical continuous vulcanization (VCV) tower at its advanced submarine cable manufacturing plant in Chesapeake, Virginia. This pivotal development underscores the company’s aggressive expansion strategy within the rapidly growing U.S. power infrastructure market.

Poised to become the largest submarine cable plant in the United States, this state-of-the-art facility is slated for completion in the latter half of 2027, with commercial production anticipated to commence in the first half of 2028.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by LS Cable & System President Koo Bon-kyu, alongside prominent figures including Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger and Senator Tim Kaine (D-Virginia), among other distinguished officials.

The VCV tower serves as a critical, high-tech production facility essential for applying insulation to advanced high-voltage cables. Its vertical manufacturing process is designed to minimize gravitational effects, significantly enhancing both product quality and overall production efficiency for critical power transmission components.

Upon its completion, this impressive 201-meter tower will not only claim the title of the world’s tallest VCV tower but also stand as the tallest structure across the entire state of Virginia.

LS Cable & System strategically positions this investment in response to the United States’ heightened focus and increased spending on critical power transmission infrastructure. This surge in investment is driven by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) data centers, the urgent need to modernize aging electricity grids, and a national imperative to strengthen domestic energy supply chains.

Demonstrating a comprehensive approach, the company is actively constructing an integrated U.S. power infrastructure business. Through its subsidiaries, LS GreenLink and LS Marine Solution are specifically targeting the ultrahigh-voltage (UHV) transmission market, while Gaon Cable is dedicated to developing robust power infrastructure solutions tailored for burgeoning AI data centers.

President Koo Bon-kyu affirmed the project’s strategic significance, stating, “LS GreenLink is envisioned as a strategic hub, poised to effectively serve both the burgeoning U.S. and European markets. We are committed to expanding our formidable presence through enhanced local production capabilities and unparalleled technological competitiveness.”

Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger lauded the project, emphasizing its anticipated benefits: “This vital project is expected to generate numerous quality jobs and significantly strengthen Virginia’s essential energy infrastructure.”
