Samsung Electronics has announced a strategic partnership with Alcedis, a German digital clinical research organization. This collaboration aims to revolutionize pharmaceutical clinical trials by transforming health data gathered from wearable devices into actionable evidence.

This groundbreaking collaboration directly addresses a critical hurdle in digital health: effectively converting the immense volume of biometric data from wearables into clinically meaningful indicators. These indicators are crucial for precisely evaluating the safety and efficacy of novel pharmaceutical drugs.

Established in 1992, Alcedis boasts extensive expertise in clinical research across diverse therapeutic areas such as oncology, cardiology, and neurology. As a key entity within global healthcare AI leader Huma, Alcedis is renowned for its specialization in data-driven clinical trials and advanced digital research platforms.

The core of this partnership involves Samsung and Alcedis jointly developing robust methodologies. Their goal is to seamlessly translate real-world biometric data, continuously collected by Samsung’s advanced wearable technology, into validated clinical endpoints and crucial biomarkers. This will significantly enhance their utility in modern drug development processes and clinical research.

With the pervasive adoption of wearable devices, pharmaceutical firms and researchers are actively exploring innovative strategies to integrate continuously monitored health data. This data offers a powerful complement to traditional clinical trial methodologies. Nevertheless, establishing universally recognized scientific and regulatory standards for this novel data integration remains a paramount challenge within the industry.

Choi Jong-min, head of the health R&D group at Samsung Electronics’ Mobile eXperience division (encompassing smartphones, tablets, and wearables), emphasized the evolving landscape of clinical research. “Clinical research is increasingly moving toward a collaborative environment that brings together technology, scientific expertise, and research partners to deepen our understanding of human health,” he stated.

He further added, “By collaborating with Alcedis, we are unlocking new opportunities for biomarker development, digital endpoint innovation, and robust evidence generation throughout the entire research life cycle.”

Echoing this sentiment, Hanno Hartlein, CEO of Alcedis, highlighted how this partnership is poised to advance more patient-centered approaches within clinical research.

Hartlein affirmed, “The future of clinical research depends on our ability to capture meaningful health data beyond traditional clinical settings.”

He concluded by stating, “Our collaboration with Samsung combines complementary strengths and scalable infrastructure to powerfully support the development of next-generation healthcare innovations.”
