SK hynix has achieved a momentous milestone, for the first time surpassing semiconductor industry titan Samsung Electronics in market capitalization. This landmark event, announced by the bourse operator on Monday, signals a significant shift in South Korea’s fiercely competitive tech landscape.
According to detailed figures from the Korea Exchange, SK hynix’s market value climbed to 2,091 trillion won (approximately $1.358 trillion) by 12:42 p.m. local time. This impressive valuation narrowly exceeded that of Samsung Electronics, which registered a market capitalization of 2,090 trillion won at the same time, highlighting the rapid ascent of the memory chip specialist.
This achievement is particularly historic, marking the first instance since the year 2000 that Samsung Electronics has ceded its leading position on the benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI). Samsung had consistently held the coveted top spot in market capitalization on the KOSPI since it initially secured the No. 1 ranking in 1999, cementing its long-standing dominance. SK hynix’s breakthrough underscores its growing influence and a new era for South Korea’s stock market and global technology sector.
