K-pop artist Jay B, leader of the global sensation GOT7, continues to forge a distinctive musical path, deeply rooted in his personal artistic vision. His anticipated third solo EP, “Tr.ee,” launched on Wednesday, featuring six tracks that masterfully blend his signature R&B sound with a profound, introspective journey through growth, relationships, and the complexities of emotional uncertainty.

While GOT7’s extensive catalog often showcased vibrant pop, dynamic dance, and genre-blending tracks designed for a seven-member powerhouse, Jay B’s solo endeavors have provided him an expansive canvas to delve into the foundational sounds that initially ignited his passion for music.

During a recent listening session in Seoul, Jay B affirmed his artistic identity, stating, “At my core, I’m an R&B artist.” He elaborated on the distinction: “As a group, we often worked with more pop-oriented sounds and followed contemporary trends. I’ve always been drawn to more vintage sounds. I love old-school soul and funk, and those influences are really the foundation of who I am as a musician.” This statement reinforces his commitment to his authentic R&B roots within his solo career.

This deep musical foundation permeates “Tr.ee,” an EP whose evocative title and conceptual framework draw inspiration from a passage by Yoo Young-man, vividly depicting trees strengthening their roots through constant movement and ‘shaking.’ Jay B shared the personal connection: “At the time, I was going through a difficult period and feeling especially anxious. Anxiety has always been part of my life, but that day it felt particularly overwhelming. Reading that passage was comforting. It made me realize that I wasn’t simply struggling — I was growing. That’s what inspired this album.” This reveals the profoundly personal origins of the “Tr.ee” album.

He clarified that the metaphor of “shaking” within the album’s concept represents profound emotional fluctuations rather than mere physical movement. “It could be excitement, or it could be anxiety,” he explained. “That’s how I interpreted it, and I wanted to express those emotions through this album.”

The core message of Jay B’s “Tr.ee” is most directly conveyed through its captivating main track, “Layback.” This song masterfully navigates the subtle tensions, budding anticipation, and inherent uncertainty that arise as two individuals forge a deeper connection. Jay B revealed the track’s intricate design, built upon contrasting emotions and rich textures. “I hear both warmth and sensuality in the song,” he noted. “But as it progresses, there’s also a rougher edge. And in the outro, I wanted to leave a stronger sense of emptiness.”

For “Tr.ee,” Jay B also pushed his vocal boundaries, challenging himself to explore new facets of his artistry. “I spent a lot of time thinking about how I could use my voice in different ways and push it further,” he stated, emphasizing this dedication extended “Not just on ‘Layback,’ but across all six songs” of the EP.

Beyond its musicality, “Tr.ee” powerfully reflects a significant evolution in Jay B’s personal philosophy. He shared how he’s moved beyond the pursuit of absolute perfection, instead embracing the importance of excelling within his current circumstances. “When I was younger, I was always focused on being the best,” he recalled. “These days, I think it’s more important to do your best with the situation you’re given.”

This transformative mindset has also liberated his approach to music creation, alleviating previous pressures. “I wanted music to feel comfortable again,” Jay B expressed. “Once I changed my attitude, I became more relaxed. Even the way I speak became calmer.”

Among the six distinct tracks, Jay B highlighted the profound significance of the closing song, “We,” identifying it as the true emotional cornerstone of the entire “Tr.ee” project. While “Layback” serves as the main track, he emphasized, “‘We’ is the root of the album. It’s the song that became the foundation for everything I wanted to say about relationships and growth.”

He further elucidated how “We” provided the inspiration for the album’s comprehensive framework, likening “We” to the essential roots beneath the ground, with the opening track “Hold on to My Back” symbolizing the fruit that beautifully emerges from those deep foundations.

Ultimately, Jay B articulates a clear hope for his “Tr.ee” listeners: that they will continue to unearth new layers and meanings within the record long after its initial release. “I hope people simply think, ‘This is good,'” he shared. “I’d love for these songs to become something people revisit from time to time, like pulling a favorite book off the shelf. And every time they come back to it, I hope they discover something they hadn’t noticed before.” This desire underscores the depth and longevity he envisions for his latest solo album.
