Hyundai Motor Group is significantly bolstering its advanced software capabilities and self-driving technology by appointing Lee Hee-seok, a former Nvidia autonomous driving expert, to its dedicated software research unit, 42dot. This strategic hire underscores the South Korean automaker’s ambitious drive to accelerate the development of cutting-edge software-defined vehicles (SDVs) and enhance its autonomous driving solutions.

Industry sources confirmed on Tuesday that 42dot has brought in Lee, a distinguished expert in computer vision technology, as its new vice president. In this pivotal role, Lee will lead critical research and development efforts focused on advanced vision-language action (VLA) models, crucial for future mobility.

This significant appointment marks the first executive-level hire from outside the company since Park Min-woo assumed leadership in January as the chief executive of 42dot, concurrently heading Hyundai Motor Group’s Advanced Vehicle Platform division.

Lee Hee-seok brings a wealth of experience as a prominent expert in both autonomous driving and computer vision technologies. His impressive career spans key roles at leading global tech firms, including Qualcomm, Nvidia, and most recently, Woowa Brothers, the innovative operator behind Korea’s popular delivery platform, Baemin.

During his eight-year tenure at Qualcomm, starting in 2013, Lee was instrumental in developing advanced camera perception systems specifically for autonomous driving applications, as detailed on his LinkedIn profile. Subsequently, he joined Nvidia in 2021, where his expertise was focused on the development of deep learning-based camera and radar perception modules vital for autonomous vehicle technology. At Woowa Brothers, Lee successfully led the development of perception systems tailored for self-driving delivery robots, showcasing his versatile experience across different autonomous platforms.

Interestingly, CEO Park Min-woo also previously worked at Nvidia before joining Hyundai Motor Group. This shared background highlights a strategic trend, with industry observers interpreting Lee’s recruitment as a vital step in the group’s broader initiative to internalize core autonomous driving technologies and attract top-tier global AI talent to solidify its leadership in future mobility.

Park Min-woo praised Lee’s past contributions, noting that Lee played a crucial role in establishing and leading a high-performing engineering group within Nvidia’s autonomous vehicle team in Korea, demonstrating his capacity for innovation and team leadership.

“It is truly great to have him join my team again in a new environment. I am excited to work with him once more as we continue building world-class autonomous driving and Physical AI capabilities at 42dot,” CEO Park expressed on his LinkedIn, emphasizing the renewed collaboration and strategic vision.

At 42dot, Lee Hee-seok is anticipated to spearhead the development of next-generation VLA models, an area critical for advanced AI in mobility. His leadership will be pivotal in significantly advancing Hyundai Motor Group’s comprehensive autonomous driving initiative, known as Atria AI.

Vision-Language Action (VLA) models represent sophisticated AI systems. These models are engineered to enable physical AI platforms, such as self-driving autonomous vehicles and advanced robots, to effectively interpret complex visual information gathered from cameras, comprehend nuanced language-based contexts, and then accurately translate these multifaceted inputs into precise, executable tasks, driving smarter autonomous operations.
