Strong growth in wealth management, brokerage and trading businesses lifts earnings at Korea Investment & Securities

Korea Investment & Securities (KIS) has announced stellar first-quarter financial results, with its operating profit approaching 1 trillion won (approximately $667.3 million USD). This impressive performance was fueled by robust and balanced growth across its core business segments: brokerage, wealth management, investment banking, and trading operations.

In its preliminary earnings filing, the financial powerhouse reported a remarkable 85 percent year-on-year surge in first-quarter consolidated operating profit, reaching 959.9 billion won.

During the same period, net profit also saw significant growth, climbing 75 percent from the previous year to 784.7 billion won.

A detailed breakdown of KIS’s Q1 operating profit reveals that its diverse business portfolio contributed substantially. Trading operations led the way, accounting for 39.1 percent of the total, followed closely by the brokerage business at 33.3 percent. Investment banking contributed 18.6 percent, with wealth management rounding out the segments at 9 percent.

The wealth management division demonstrated exceptional strength, experiencing a substantial 71.6 percent year-on-year increase in sales commissions. This surge was primarily driven by robust sales of high-demand financial products, including bonds, short-term notes, and beneficiary certificates.

According to a KIS official, the company has successfully evolved beyond traditional stock brokerage services, positioning itself as a premier “comprehensive wealth management platform” specifically designed for retail investors. This strategic transformation underscores KIS’s commitment to broader financial solutions.

Evidence of this successful pivot is clear in the growth of retail client financial product balances at KIS, which expanded from 85.1 trillion won at the end of last year to an impressive 94.5 trillion won. This signifies a monthly average inflow of over 3 trillion won in client funds into the brokerage firm throughout the current year.

Further boosting KIS’s profitability, brokerage-related profit soared by 55 percent compared to the previous year, benefiting from strong stock market rallies. Investment banking profit also climbed 14.7 percent year-on-year. The firm’s dynamic trading and sales & trading businesses were equally instrumental in achieving these solid overall earnings, the company stated.

As a testament to its financial stability and market leadership, KIS’s standalone equity capital stood at an impressive 12.7 trillion won at the close of the first quarter. This remarkable figure solidifies its position as having the industry’s largest equity capital among all local brokerage firms.

Looking ahead, Korea Investment & Securities affirmed its strategic vision to become a leading global financial investment company. The company emphasized its ongoing efforts to strengthen its foundation and cultivate a balanced profit structure, reducing over-reliance on any single business segment or volatile market conditions for sustainable long-term growth.
