Upstage Revolutionizes Search: Acquires Daum Operator AXZ for AI-Powered Platform
Leading South Korean artificial intelligence startup, Upstage, announced Thursday the strategic completion of its acquisition of AXZ, the company behind the popular portal site Daum. This landmark move is set to establish an innovative AI-powered search platform, seamlessly integrating Upstage’s cutting-edge large language models with one of Korea’s most established search engines.
This significant deal follows a memorandum of understanding initially signed with AXZ’s parent company, Kakao, in January, culminating in a thorough four-month due diligence process. The agreement grants Upstage full ownership of AXZ via a strategic share swap, while Kakao secures a minority stake in Upstage, fostering a collaborative future.
Upstage’s ambitious strategy involves leveraging Daum’s powerful search engine and extensive database in conjunction with its proprietary large language model, Solar. This powerful combination is designed to develop a next-generation, AI-based platform that redefines how users interact with information.
The forthcoming platform promises to deliver advanced “context AI” services. Unlike conventional search engines that provide results based on simple keywords, Upstage’s innovative approach will enable users to receive highly relevant search answers, deeply informed by the specific context and nuanced intent of their queries.
Furthermore, this strategic initiative is expected to bolster Upstage’s broader vision to cultivate a sovereign AI foundation model. This endeavor will play a crucial role in democratizing access to artificial intelligence for the wider public, making advanced AI capabilities more readily available.
“We are confident that the synergy created by our leading technology and Daum’s three decades of unparalleled service will mark the dawn of a new era in the AI industry,” stated Upstage CEO Kim Sung-hoon.
