South Korea is strategically broadening its free trade agreement (FTA) network, targeting dynamic emerging markets across Latin America and Africa. This proactive initiative, announced by Finance Minister Koo Yun-cheol on Monday, is a key component of the nation’s strategy to enhance supply chain resilience and diversification.

Addressing an economy-related ministerial meeting, Minister Koo underscored that this expansion transcends simple responses to existing trade challenges. “The government is committed to strengthening its FTA network as a direct means to stimulate and support robust export growth,” he stated.

He further elaborated on the evolving global trade landscape, noting that it is experiencing significant structural transformations. These changes are primarily driven by the weakening of traditional multilateral trade norms and an intensified competitive environment among major international economies.

In light of these global shifts, the South Korean government recognizes the imperative to continuously expand and strategically upgrade its comprehensive free trade agreement network.

“Our future focus involves significantly widening our FTA reach into pivotal emerging markets,” Koo affirmed. He specified key regions such as Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Africa, emphasizing that this broad approach is essential for fundamentally diversifying global supply chains and securing future economic stability.
