EcoPro Innovation announced Sunday that its subsidiary, EcoPro Lithium, has successfully secured CAD 6 million (approximately $4.33 million USD) in crucial research funding. This significant investment from Natural Resources Canada will accelerate the development of advanced lithium metal anodes, a core component for next-generation solid-state batteries.
This strategic funding aligns with the Canadian government’s robust energy innovation program, a key initiative designed to bolster and establish a resilient domestic battery supply chain within Canada. The support underscores the nation’s commitment to clean energy and sustainable technology development.
EcoPro Innovation, a leading producer and supplier of lithium hydroxide, plans to leverage this funding to propel its pilot project focused on lithium metal anode processes for groundbreaking battery technologies. Lithium metal anodes represent a transformative leap forward, offering up to 10 times higher energy density compared to conventional graphite anodes. This breakthrough is expected to significantly extend the driving range and enhance the performance of electric vehicles (EVs).
The company’s commitment to lithium metal anode innovation began with a joint development agreement signed with Hydro-Quebec in March of last year. Through this latest project, EcoPro Innovation aims to establish a comprehensive local value chain in Canada by March 2027. This ambitious plan encompasses the entire spectrum from production and high-purity refining to ultrathin foil manufacturing and rigorous safety validation, solidifying Canada’s role in future battery technology.
Beyond its pioneering work in lithium metal anodes, the broader EcoPro Group is actively advancing other critical materials essential for solid-state batteries. These include cutting-edge solid electrolytes, high-performance cathode materials, and lithium sulfide. Demonstrating its progress, the company has already established a pilot facility for solid electrolytes at its Ochang headquarters in North Chungcheong Province. This facility is currently producing samples with an impressive annual capacity of 40 metric tons, targeting commercialization as early as next year.
An official from EcoPro Innovation highlighted the collaborative efforts with the Canadian government and key local partners. The company is dedicated to advancing lithium metal anode technology and anticipates that this latest funding will substantially accelerate ongoing research and development initiatives, paving the way for sustainable energy solutions.
