E-commerce leader Coupang has initiated pilot programs for autonomous driving systems within its logistics operations, specifically for trucks transporting goods between key distribution centers, industry sources revealed on Friday.
Coupang is actively collaborating with several prominent domestic autonomous driving technology firms, including RideFlux. This strategic partnership aims to seamlessly integrate advanced automation into its supply chain, even as Korea navigates the development of standardized regulatory frameworks for autonomous freight transport.
Reports indicate that initial contracts are already in place, following discussions that commenced late last year. The focus is on deploying these cutting-edge systems for efficient inter-facility cargo movement and automating critical loading and unloading processes.
Implementing autonomous middle-mile trucking solutions offers significant strategic advantages for Coupang, including substantial reductions in labor costs and the potential for near-continuous operational uptime. This is particularly crucial given the increasing challenges in staffing overnight and long-haul delivery routes within the logistics sector.
An industry expert noted, “Coupang’s competitive edge largely stems from its renowned dawn delivery service. Enhancing logistics efficiency through automation will undeniably bolster its market position. Moreover, this technological adoption provides a compelling case for innovation that can ease the burden on human workers rather than intensify it.”
This forward-looking initiative aligns perfectly with Korea’s evolving regulatory and technical landscape, especially following the government’s expansion of autonomous driving pilot programs across its national expressway network last year.
Furthermore, this move is a cornerstone of Coupang’s overarching network expansion strategy.
Earlier this month, the e-commerce giant unveiled ambitious plans to extend its signature Rocket Delivery service across the entire nation by 2027. This expansion includes reaching remote areas facing demographic challenges, leveraging advanced smart logistics technologies such as automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and mobile robotic systems to ensure widespread coverage.
Demonstrating its market leadership, Coupang, as of August last year, operated an impressive 228 registered logistics centers throughout Korea via its dedicated fulfillment and logistics divisions. This milestone positioned Coupang as the nation’s largest warehouse operator among major logistics companies, surpassing CJ Logistics for the first time.
