Leading K-beauty retailer, CJ Olive Young, is embarking on its most significant regional expansion to date, investing a substantial 123.8 billion won ($84 million). This strategic funding aims to bolster local economies and foster new career opportunities by expanding large-format stores and enhancing logistics infrastructure across South Korea, beyond the Seoul metropolitan area.
Announced Thursday, CJ Olive Young plans for 78 new or renovated large-format stores this year, with 43 strategically located in non-metropolitan regions. Key tourist destinations like Busan and Jeju Island are set to feature new flagship stores specifically designed to attract and serve foreign visitors. Additionally, the Gyeongsang, Jeolla, and Chungcheong provinces will see significant large-scale outlets opening in both burgeoning new districts and established downtown areas, enhancing access to K-beauty products nationwide.
In a major boost to its logistics capabilities, Olive Young has significantly upgraded its distribution center in Gyeongsan, North Gyeongsang Province. This enhancement now enables efficient same-day delivery services across Daegu and the wider province, ensuring faster access to beauty and wellness products. A similar expedited delivery service is also slated for launch on Jeju Island later in the year, further improving regional customer experience.
The strategic impact of Olive Young’s large-format stores is already evident. Locations opened last year in Daejeon, Seomyeon (Busan), and Gangneung (Gangwon Province) reported an impressive average increase of 25 percent in foot traffic within six months of opening. Furthermore, sales to foreign customers in key regions like South Gyeongsang Province, North Chungcheong Province, and Ulsan experienced a remarkable surge of over 120 percent compared to the previous year, highlighting the appeal of K-beauty to international visitors.
Beyond economic stimulus, Olive Young is committed to robust job creation, planning to hire approximately 600 new employees specifically in non-metropolitan areas this year. The company proudly notes that over 90 percent of its full-time store hires as of last year began their careers as part-time workers, showcasing a clear pathway for professional growth within the organization.
To further cultivate specialized beauty and wellness talent, Olive Young introduced a dedicated beauty consultant role in January. This initiative is part of a broader commitment to professional development, with additional comprehensive training programs slated for implementation, including specialized sessions at regional stores across the country.
An Olive Young official underscored the strategic vision, stating, “Our regional investment not only significantly strengthens local economies but also provides vital platforms for young individuals to develop and thrive as skilled K-beauty professionals.” This statement reaffirms Olive Young’s dedication to both economic contribution and talent nurturing in South Korea’s vibrant beauty sector.
