BAT Korea Manufacturing, the local production arm of global tobacco group British American Tobacco, is demonstrating how ESG is evolving from one-off giving to sustained, community-focused action. The company emphasizes long-term commitment and local partnerships.
At its plant in Sacheon, South Gyeongsang Province, the company is actively collaborating with local governments, universities, and public agencies to tackle water resource challenges. This reflects a growing trend towards participatory environmental, social, and governance (ESG) models that prioritize collaboration and tangible, on-the-ground impact.
This proactive approach has earned BAT Korea Manufacturing the prestigious “Platinum” certification from the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS), recognizing their high standards in water management and community engagement.
From Environmental Cleanup to Environmental Conservation: Expanding the Scope of ESG
Since 2023, the Sacheon plant has organized annual plogging campaigns – combining jogging with litter collection – to commemorate World Water Day. Now in its fourth year, the program has matured into a well-structured community initiative.
This year’s event, held on March 20, saw the participation of approximately 70 individuals from Gyeongsang National University, Sacheon City, the local chamber of commerce, and the Korea Water Resources Corporation, highlighting a collaborative spirit.
Significantly, the campaign extended its reach to Gwangpoman Bay, a protected wetland and vital habitat for endangered migratory birds, known for its unique salt marsh ecosystem. This location has recently experienced increasing concerns related to pollution and habitat degradation, emphasizing the urgent need for sustained conservation efforts.
Unlike previous campaigns, this year’s program integrated environmental education. Participants were given guided ecological tours, increasing understanding of wetland preservation and biodiversity. The tours included observations of various bird species and local ecosystems, increasing their knowledge.
This shift illustrates a transition from simple cleanup activities to a deeper engagement with complex environmental issues, helping participants grasp the critical role of wetlands within broader water resource systems.
From Community Participation to Environmental Restoration
The company’s emphasis on a participatory approach is closely linked to its overarching water management strategy and environmental stewardship.
BAT Korea Manufacturing treats and reuses approximately 60,000 tons of wastewater annually from its industrial processes. The company also collaborates with local authorities on projects such as water quality monitoring and flood prevention.
More recently, the company has expanded its conservation efforts to encompass ecological restoration projects. In collaboration with local university researchers, BAT Korea Manufacturing is undertaking the restoration of a centuries-old well located in Singi Village. This well had been abandoned following the introduction of modern water supply systems.
The well, which served as a crucial drinking water source for 300 to 400 years, is currently undergoing rehabilitation to meet potable water standards. Plans are in place for continuous monitoring to ensure its long-term sustainability and water safety.
This restoration project aligns with core requirements of the AWS certification, specifically addressing the protection of “Important Water-Related Areas.”
