Hyundai Motor Group has announced its commitment to rolling out comprehensive energy-saving measures across all its affiliates. This initiative aligns with government policies aimed at addressing the growing national energy concerns.
The announcement arrives amid escalating oil prices fueled by ongoing tensions in the Middle East, placing increased strain on South Korea, the fourth-largest economy in Asia.
A key component of this strategy is the expansion of the vehicle rotation system, previously implemented at the Hyundai Motor and Kia headquarters, to encompass all affiliated companies. Furthermore, the group intends to augment employee shuttle bus services to curtail private vehicle usage and progressively replace existing internal combustion engine buses with eco-friendly hydrogen-powered alternatives.
The company will also minimize domestic business travel, opting for virtual meetings whenever possible to reduce vehicle emissions. When travel is unavoidable, priority will be given to eco-friendly vehicles, such as electric and hydrogen cars, with a phased transition of the entire fleet towards green vehicles.
To effectively reduce electricity consumption, Hyundai Motor Group will bolster energy management across its workplaces. This includes optimizing power usage during weekdays, holidays, lunch breaks, and evenings. Stricter control measures will be implemented for PCs, heating and cooling systems, and lighting.
The Group will introduce AI-powered energy-saving systems, integrating smart features into CCTV cameras within office corridors, parking areas, and lobbies. These systems will automatically switch off lights when no movement is detected for a set period.
The Group also stated they will optimize facility operations and upgrade aging infrastructure, minimizing idle running time at production sites and increasing electricity leakage inspections.
In the long term, Hyundai Motor Group plans to strengthen energy supply by installing additional solar power facilities at production bases, parking lots, and high-tech centers. This includes expanding the use of energy storage systems and renewable energy power purchase agreements.
“We have established practical measures to reduce energy consumption and will actively implement them across all affiliates in line with the government’s energy-saving policies,” a company official stated.
