Posco Future M announced Wednesday a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Kumho Petrochemical and BEI to collaborate on developing next-generation anode-free lithium metal batteries. This partnership reinforces the Posco Group’s commitment to pioneering advanced battery materials for high-performance applications.
The agreement, formalized at the Posco Center in Gangnam, Seoul, leverages the synergistic strengths of each company across the battery supply chain. Posco Future M will spearhead the development of cathode materials specifically optimized for anode-free designs. Kumho Petrochemical will contribute high-performance carbon nanotubes, crucial for enhancing charging speed and extending battery lifespan. BEI will provide essential manufacturing infrastructure and production expertise to the project.
Anode-free lithium metal batteries represent a significant advancement in battery technology. By eliminating the anode and enabling direct lithium ion deposition onto the current collector, this innovative design achieves a 30 to 50 percent increase in energy density while simultaneously reducing battery weight.
Charging speeds are projected to more than double compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries, positioning this technology as ideal for demanding applications such as drones, advanced air mobility (AAM), high-performance electric vehicles (EVs), and robotics.
The three companies plan to evaluate opportunities for joint commercialization based on the outcomes of their collaborative development efforts, with a focus on targeting the rapidly expanding high-performance battery markets.
“We will consolidate our R&D capabilities to introduce a next-generation battery that can reshape the current market,” said Hong Young-jun, head of Posco Future M’s Technology Research Laboratory.
