Posco Future M is investing in a new synthetic graphite anode material plant in Thai Nguyen, Vietnam, aiming to capture a larger share of the global market. The expansion will support the increasing demand for high-performance battery materials.
The company announced on Thursday that its board has approved an investment of approximately 3.57 billion won ($2.44 million) for the new facility. Construction is scheduled to commence in the second half of the year, with mass production anticipated to begin in 2028.
The plant site is designed for future expansion, with the potential to scale production capacity up to 55,000 tons, based on incoming order volumes.
Synthetic graphite is a critical component for enhancing battery performance, but the supply chain faces concentration risks. This investment helps diversify sourcing options for global battery manufacturers.
In response to tightening trade regulations and the growing need for secure battery material supply chains, Posco Future M is bolstering its in-house production capabilities, focusing on synthetic graphite anode materials.
Vietnam offers strategic advantages, including competitive labor and logistics costs, leading to more attractive pricing compared to other Southeast Asian nations. The country’s export-oriented policies also create favorable trade conditions, particularly with key markets such as the US.
Posco Future M previously established a synthetic graphite anode material plant in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, in 2021. Since then, the company has broadened its anode material offerings by expanding production capacity for both natural and synthetic graphite, while also advancing the development and commercialization of silicon-based anode materials.
The company stated that the Vietnam investment will further its ambition to become a leading global battery materials provider, leveraging the technological advancements developed through its domestic operations.
