LG CNS Launches AI Box: Containerized Data Center

LG CNS announced the launch of its innovative containerized artificial intelligence data center solution, AI Box, designed to meet the surging global demand for AI infrastructure. This modular system promises to revolutionize AI deployments by housing hundreds of GPUs in a single, self-contained unit.

The AI Box is a micro data center module capable of supporting up to 576 GPUs, delivering an IT power capacity of 1.2 megawatts within a single container. This compact and powerful design offers a rapid deployment solution for organizations seeking to scale their AI capabilities.

By eliminating the need for traditional building construction, the AI Box significantly reduces deployment time. LG CNS estimates that the system can be operational in approximately six months, a stark contrast to the two years typically required for building a conventional data center. This accelerated timeline allows businesses to quickly capitalize on AI opportunities.

“LG CNS’ AI Box, integrating AI servers, power, cooling, and operational systems into a single unit, is set to transform the data center industry,” stated Cho Heon-hyeock, executive director of the Data Center Unit at LG CNS. “We are leveraging our successful deployments in South Korea to expand our business into global markets, including Southeast Asia and North America.”

The company is planning its first major AI Box installation in Busan, envisioning a campus of approximately 50 units within a 27,179-square-meter global cloud data center complex. This deployment will serve as a showcase for the system’s capabilities and scalability.

Each AI Box is equipped with an electrical room featuring transformers and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, alongside a server room housing the GPUs and advanced cooling infrastructure. This comprehensive design ensures reliable and efficient operation.

External support facilities, including generators, battery rooms, and chillers, further enhance the system’s reliability by guaranteeing a stable power supply and optimal heat management, crucial in high-density AI environments.

The modular design allows for seamless scaling. Multiple AI Box units can be interconnected to create hyperscale AI data centers, enabling customers to incrementally expand capacity while minimizing upfront investment. This pay-as-you-grow approach offers flexibility and cost-effectiveness.

This solution integrates LG CNS’ expertise in data center design, construction, and operation with hardware from other LG Group affiliates. This synergy ensures a comprehensive and optimized AI infrastructure solution.

LG Electronics provides advanced cooling systems, including coolant distribution units and industrial chillers, while LG Energy Solution supplies high-performance battery systems for uninterrupted power supply, ensuring the AI Box operates reliably even during power outages.
