Posco announced Friday the establishment of a “One Team” system focused on eight strategic steel products, a move designed to secure its leadership position in high-value, next-generation markets.
This strategic shift involves the creation of dedicated project teams centered around key premium products. These include PosMAC, a corrosion-resistant alloy-coated steel sheet widely utilized in renewable energy infrastructure; GigaSteel, an ultra-high-strength, lightweight automotive steel; HyperNO, a non-oriented electrical steel essential for high-efficiency motors; and high-manganese (Mn) steel, an alloy renowned for its exceptional cryogenic toughness and wear resistance, making it ideal for LNG tanks and demanding industrial applications.
Earlier in February, Posco initiated teams focused on next-generation stainless steel targeting growth industries, PosMAC for the expanding renewable energy sector, high-manganese steel, and premium electric arc furnaces. This followed December’s launch of teams concentrating on energy-grade heavy plate, electrical steel, GigaSteel, and HyperNO. With all eight technical development teams now operational, the company is advancing toward the full-scale commercialization of its strategic product portfolio.
Each “One Team” operates directly under the purview of Pohang and Gwangyang Steelworks, facilitating the rapid integration of research and development outcomes into the production process. This organizational structure aims to accelerate development cycles and expedite the deployment of high-margin steel products.
Posco is refining its product differentiation strategy, aligning with the specialized capabilities of its two primary steel production facilities.
Pohang Steelworks will concentrate on enhancing energy steels employed in the oil, gas, power generation, and renewable energy sectors. Meanwhile, Gwangyang Steelworks, designated as the company’s automotive steel hub, will solidify its position in the autonomous driving and next-generation mobility industries.
This initiative is launched as Korean steel manufacturers face growing pressure from tariff increases in vital export markets and an 8 percent decrease in shipments to the United States. The government is responding with proposed legislation aimed at bolstering export competitiveness and accelerating decarbonization efforts.
“While the influx of low-priced imports and global tariff barriers are impacting our business environment, we will expand our product offerings around eight core strategic products and strengthen our leadership in emerging industrial markets,” stated a Posco official.
