Krafton, the South Korean game developer behind global hits, announced Monday the creation of a Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO) position. Lee Kang-wook, head of the AI division, has been appointed to lead the company’s AI technology strategy.
As CAIO, Lee will be responsible for overseeing AI research and development, as well as formulating Krafton’s mid- to long-term AI roadmap. The appointment highlights Krafton’s commitment to leveraging AI and recognizing Lee’s expertise in advanced AI research, project management, and leadership.
Dr. Lee Kang-wook earned his doctorate in electrical and computer engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 2016. He served as a professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison starting in 2019. He joined Krafton in 2022, and since then, has significantly improved the company’s AI research infrastructure and spearheaded the development of its own proprietary foundation model.
Last year, Lee spearheaded a collaborative project with Nvidia, resulting in the unveiling of a “co-playable character,” an innovative AI system designed to engage with users in real-time interactions within gaming environments.
With Lee’s appointment, Krafton aims to enhance its AI-powered game infrastructure and pursue new technology-driven business ventures. The company plans to improve user experiences, optimize game development processes, and unlock new avenues for growth utilizing AI technologies.
“Krafton views AI not as a substitute for human creativity, but as an enabler that expands the boundaries of imagination,” said Lee Kang-wook. “Alongside strengthening our core gaming business, we will explore the long-term scalability of AI technology and data.”
