Citi Korea announced the launch of its new Korea Desk in Chicago on Friday, bolstering its financial support for South Korean businesses expanding into the North American market.
This strategic expansion strengthens Citi Korea’s presence and complements its existing New York City operations, enabling enhanced support for Korean corporate clients throughout the United States and beyond.
Citi Korea established its inaugural Korea Desk in New York in 1993, subsequently extending similar operations to major financial hubs across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
The bank currently operates six Korea Desks dedicated to serving large corporations and ten desks focused on supporting mid-sized companies globally.
“Citi Korea has a longstanding commitment to supporting Korean corporate clients by seamlessly connecting the financial operations of their Korean headquarters with their overseas subsidiaries through our Korea Desks located in key global markets,” stated Kim Kyung-ho, Head of the Corporate Banking Group at Citi Korea. “The launch of the Chicago Korea Desk further amplifies this critical capability in North America, offering robust support for Korean corporate clients operating in the US Midwest as they navigate and manage their funding and financial transactions consistently within the local financial environment.”
Chicago serves as a pivotal gateway to North American markets, leveraging its strategic position as a prominent manufacturing and logistics center in the US Midwest, according to the company.
Korean companies are rapidly increasing their footprint in the United States across diverse sectors, including manufacturing, energy, semiconductors, and services. As these companies establish production and sales facilities in multiple regions and their operations become geographically dispersed, the need for stable, locally managed financial systems aligned with headquarters-level standards is growing, the company noted.
Each Korea Desk operates through a collaborative approach, combining the expertise of local Citi professionals, with their deep understanding of the local financial landscape, and bankers from Korea who specialize in serving Korean corporate clients. This model enables the desks to provide not only local financial services but also to act as a direct liaison between corporate headquarters in Korea and their overseas subsidiaries.
For Korean-based companies, international expansion has heightened the demand for oversight and transparency in local financial activities.
The Korea Desk supports clients by effectively managing cash flows and financial transaction structures in accordance with corporate policies.
“This approach effectively mitigates financial risks between headquarters and local operations, facilitating more efficient and consistent financial management,” the company said. “Ultimately, this empowers clients to operate their overseas businesses under a unified and cohesive framework.”
