Amazon Web Services (AWS) Korea has announced plans to invest an additional 7 trillion won (approximately $4.6 billion USD) in South Korea by 2031. This significant investment will focus on expanding its artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud infrastructure, as well as enhancing AI-driven cybersecurity solutions for businesses and organizations operating in the region.

This initiative, revealed through the Korea Internet & Security Agency portal, marks the largest investment to date by a global cloud provider in South Korea. It will bring AWS’s total investment in the country to a substantial 12.6 trillion won, solidifying its commitment to the Korean market.

AWS anticipates that its operations will contribute an estimated 15.6 trillion won to South Korea’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) between 2023 and 2027, highlighting its increasing importance in the country’s rapidly growing digital economy.

In addition to expanding its infrastructure footprint, AWS is actively integrating generative AI capabilities into its security operations. The company’s Security Incident Response service now leverages AI agents to more effectively investigate cyber incidents, leading to significantly improved detection and faster response times for its customers.

AWS is also reinforcing its broader security framework by implementing a zero-trust architecture and mandating multi-factor authentication for all users, providing enhanced protection against evolving cyber threats.

The company emphasizes its ongoing commitment to meeting both global and local compliance standards, including achieving CSAP and ISMS certifications. These certifications are crucial as AWS aims to further expand its presence in Korea’s public and financial sectors, providing secure and compliant cloud solutions.

“Security is our top priority, and we will continue to invest to support safe AI adoption,” stated Ham Kee-ho, AWS Korea Country Managing Director, underscoring the company’s dedication to providing secure and reliable cloud services in South Korea.
