Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans are returning to direct the sequel to Netflix’s global phenomenon, as announced by the streaming giant.
“As a Korean filmmaker, I’m incredibly proud that audiences are eager for more of this Korean story and its characters,” said Kang. “There’s so much more to explore within the world we’ve created, and I can’t wait to share it with you. This is just the beginning.”
The original film, produced by Sony Pictures Animation, premiered in June 2025 and has amassed over 500 million views worldwide.
“We’re thrilled to write the next chapter for these characters, challenge them, and witness their growth,” Appelhans stated regarding the upcoming sequel, “and to continue pushing the boundaries of music, animation, and storytelling.”
The film has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song (“Golden”). The Oscars ceremony will take place this Sunday (U.S. time).
