Samsung SDI is set to introduce its innovative AI-powered battery safety solution for energy storage systems (ESS) at InterBattery 2026, the company announced on Sunday. This cutting-edge technology, named Samsung Battery Intelligence (SBI), leverages artificial intelligence to proactively monitor and manage battery health, enhancing safety and efficiency for ESS deployments.
Samsung Battery Intelligence employs AI to diagnose the holistic health of batteries, identifying potential issues and anomalies before they escalate. This proactive approach allows operators to foresee and mitigate safety risks, ensuring the reliable operation of energy storage systems.
The system is trained on a wealth of operational data collected from over 1,400 ESS sites globally, enabling it to learn from extensive real-world experiences. Utilizing proprietary algorithms, SBI meticulously analyzes critical indicators such as power output fluctuations and variations in battery aging rates – a key determinant of battery lifespan.
Beyond simple data analysis, SBI distinguishes itself through its ability to quantitatively assess battery performance during operation, utilizing proprietary diagnostic indicators to provide a comprehensive performance evaluation.
Samsung SDI emphasizes that SBI will empower ESS clients to preemptively address potential hazards, including battery fires, while simultaneously optimizing battery management to reduce operational, maintenance, and repair costs.
In response to increasingly stringent global safety standards for ESS, Samsung SDI plans to integrate SBI with its established hardware safety technologies, including Enhanced Direct Injection and No Thermal Propagation, to further bolster overall ESS battery safety management.
The initial application of SBI will be in conjunction with the Samsung Battery Box 1.5, a utility-scale ESS product slated for deployment in October as part of a Korean government ESS initiative.
Samsung SDI intends to progressively roll out the technology across its entire SBB product range and offer support for integrating SBI into existing ESS deployments.
“Through these distinguished technologies, our goal is to deliver the safest and most cost-effective energy solutions to our customers, thereby solidifying our position as a leader in the global ESS battery market,” stated a Samsung SDI representative.
