King's Warden Korean Drama Success: 10 Million Viewers

By Woo Jae-yeon

The historical drama “The King’s Warden” has achieved a rare feat, surpassing 10 million admissions on Friday and dominating the domestic box office. This marks the first film in two years to reach this coveted milestone.

Directed by Jang Hang-jun, “The King’s Warden” chronicles the poignant final years of King Danjong (Park Ji-hoon) during his exile. The film blends historical fact with imaginative storytelling, depicting the young king’s remaining days and the solace he finds in the kindness of the local villagers, led by village chief Eom Heung-do (Yoo Hai-jin).

While various factors contribute to a film’s box office success, critics consistently highlight Park Ji-hoon’s compelling performance as a crucial element in “The King’s Warden’s” triumph.

Park is praised for his convincing portrayal of the young King Danjong (1441-57), who reigned for approximately three years before being overthrown by his uncle, King Sejo. He died in exile at the young age of 16 in Cheongnyeongpo, Yeongwol, now part of Gangwon Province.

As of Friday morning, the film holds an average rating of 8.93 out of 10 on Naver, Korea’s leading portal site, based on 6,292 viewer reviews.

“Park Ji-hoon’s gaze is so powerful; you immediately understand why he was chosen for the role,” wrote one viewer, a comment that resonated with over 12,700 users.

Notably, “The King’s Warden” marks Park Ji-hoon’s feature film debut, following his acclaimed leading role in the popular Netflix series “Weak Hero.”

Yoo Hai-jin, known for his ability to elicit laughter in unexpected moments, provides much-needed levity to the film. While maintaining the film’s emotional depth, the veteran actor draws viewers into the young king’s suffering and portrays the villagers’ gradual and sincere transformation into his devoted protectors.

Yoo Hai-jin is a familiar face in Korean cinema and a seasoned member of the “10-million-admissions club,” having starred in films like “The King and the Clown” (2005), “Veteran” (2015), “A Taxi Driver” (2017), and “Exhuma” (2024).

The supporting cast also delivers strong performances: Yoo Ji-tae of “Oldboy” and “One Fine Spring Day” offers a compelling portrayal of the ruthless Han Myeong-hoe, a key advisor to King Sejo, while Jeon Mi-do embodies quiet strength and emotional resilience as Maehwa, the king’s loyal court lady.

Another key factor in the film’s success is its positive word-of-mouth, establishing it as a must-see for audiences of all ages and attracting families to theaters during the Lunar New Year and March 1st Independence Movement Day holidays.

Film critic Yoon Sung-eun notes that the film’s portrayal of King Danjong’s transformation “from a monarch abandoned by the royal court to a man who finds common ground with ordinary people, enriches their lives, and ultimately summons the courage to stand up against injustice,” resonates deeply with audiences.
