SK hynix has announced a significant investment of 21.6 trillion won ($15.1 billion USD) to expand its presence at the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster. This investment will fuel the construction of its first semiconductor fabrication plant, designed to be a pivotal center for AI semiconductor production.
The new capital will facilitate the development of Phases 2 through 6 of the cleanroom and contribute to the overall completion of the initial fab. Construction is projected to run from March 1, 2026, to December 31, 2030.
This follows an initial commitment of 9.4 trillion won in July 2024 for Phase 1, encompassing the first fab and associated infrastructure. With this latest injection of funds, the total investment in the first fab is estimated to reach approximately 31 trillion won.
The expansive Yongin cluster, spanning 4.16 million square meters, will eventually accommodate four state-of-the-art fabs, allocating 1.97 million square meters specifically for semiconductor manufacturing. SK hynix also intends to create a collaborative ecosystem featuring over 50 suppliers, both domestic and international, with an anticipated total investment reaching 600 trillion won.
Construction on the first fab commenced in February 2022, and SK hynix is actively working to accelerate its completion, aiming for a mid-2027 launch. Following the operationalization of the first fab, the remaining three fabs will be developed sequentially, solidifying the Yongin cluster’s position as a leading global hub for AI semiconductor innovation and production.
The company intends to produce next-generation DRAM, including high-bandwidth memory (HBM), at the first fab. The manufacturing focus will adapt to evolving market demands over time.
In response to increasing demand for AI memory solutions, SK hynix has enlarged the factory’s footprint by 1.5 times and will integrate advanced technologies like extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography equipment.
