Coupang has announced that approximately 200,000 Taiwanese users were affected by the recent data breach impacting roughly 3.3 million accounts, an incident initially reported in November. The e-commerce giant is taking steps to address the situation and support its users.

Coupang stated that Mandiant, a leading American cybersecurity firm and Google subsidiary, has confirmed the data breach specifically impacted accounts based in Taiwan. They further clarified that the attacker only retained data from a single Taiwan-based account.

“The accessed data from the Taiwanese accounts was limited to essential contact and order details, including names, email addresses, phone numbers, delivery addresses, and limited order histories,” Coupang explained. “Crucially, no financial information, payment card details, login credentials (such as passwords), or government-issued identification were compromised for any Taiwan-based accounts.”

While the initial announcement of the breach lacked specific details on Taiwanese accounts, Coupang emphasized its ongoing collaboration with Taiwan’s Ministry of Digital Affairs since the outset of the investigation.

As a gesture of goodwill, Coupang is offering vouchers valued at approximately $31 to the owners of the affected user accounts in Taiwan.

“Coupang remains dedicated to working closely with government agencies in both Korea and Taiwan throughout this process,” the company stated. “While there is currently no evidence suggesting misuse of the compromised data or secondary harm resulting from the incident, we are actively monitoring the situation and will provide updates as new information emerges.”
