Sejong Institute Enrollment: Overseas Korean Language Learners Exceed 230,000

Global interest in learning Korean continues to surge, as evidenced by the increasing enrollment at Sejong Institutes worldwide. In 2025, a total of 239,020 students participated in Sejong Institute programs, marking an increase from 210,374 students in 2024. This figure represents a more than doubling of enrollment since 2020, when 101,675 students were recorded.

Since 2007, the South Korean government has been funding the King Sejong Institute, named after the Joseon Dynasty king renowned for inventing the Korean alphabet, Hangeul. This initiative aims to promote a greater understanding and appreciation of Korean language and culture on a global scale.

A recent survey conducted by the foundation revealed a high level of satisfaction with Sejong Institute programs, reaching 93.1 out of 100 points. The survey also indicated that approximately 46.3 percent of respondents found that Sejong Institute courses were beneficial to their local academic pursuits. Furthermore, 22.4 percent and 16.2 percent reported that the programs aided them in securing employment at Korean companies abroad and in South Korea, respectively.

“The King Sejong Institute is expanding its student base in response to growing demand for Korean language and culture abroad while continuously improving learner satisfaction,” stated the foundation’s acting President Choi Hyun-seong.
