Tesla CEO Elon Musk is personally promoting a hiring initiative in South Korea, seeking semiconductor engineers and AI software developers to join the electric vehicle company. This move highlights Tesla’s growing interest in bolstering its AI capabilities and chip design expertise.

Musk amplified Tesla Korea’s job advertisement on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, using South Korean flag emojis and stating, “If you’re in Korea and want to work on chip design, fabrication or AI software, join Tesla!” This direct appeal underscores the importance Tesla places on attracting top talent in South Korea’s competitive tech sector.

The initial job posting from Tesla Korea, published two days prior, specifically targets artificial intelligence chip design engineers. The company’s objective, as outlined in the announcement, is to develop a world-leading AI chip architecture with the highest production volume. They are actively recruiting engineers to spearhead this ambitious project.

Tesla’s recruitment efforts in South Korea are likely to exacerbate existing concerns about a potential “brain drain” of skilled engineers. In recent years, specialists in areas like memory chips and high bandwidth memory (HBM) have transitioned to overseas companies such as Micron Technology (USA) and CXMT (China), leading to worries about technology leakage and its impact on the South Korean semiconductor industry.

Tesla’s current project involves establishing AI data centers, for which advanced semiconductors are a vital component. Industry experts suggest that this initiative indicates broader ambitions that extend beyond mere chip design.

The creation of AI semiconductors demands a comprehensive approach, encompassing not only skilled design teams but also foundry partners for manufacturing, advanced memory chips to facilitate high-speed data transfer for AI accelerators, and cutting-edge packaging technologies to integrate processors and memory into a unified system.

In July of the previous year, Tesla formalized a significant $16.5 billion agreement with Samsung Electronics for the production of its A16 chips. Musk stated at the time that he would personally oversee the manufacturing process at Samsung’s facility in Taylor, Texas. This announcement fueled speculation that Tesla is preparing for a more extensive push into the realm of semiconductor manufacturing.

“Our AI5 chip design is almost done and AI6 is in early stages, but there will be AI7, AI8 and AI9,” Musk shared on X in January. “Aiming for a 9-month design cycle. Join us to work on what I predict will be the highest volume AI chips in the world by far!”

Tesla’s AI series chips are crucial to the operation of its autonomous vehicles, humanoid robots, and AI models. They are high-performance processors that form the core of the company’s technological advancements.

Some industry observers believe that Musk may eventually aim for direct manufacturing of AI chips. The entrepreneur recently finalized plans to merge SpaceX, his space exploration company, with xAI, the AI startup focused on developing large language models. Within Musk’s expanding AI ecosystem, semiconductors are emerging as critical strategic assets.
