Former Samsung Electronics Vice President Ahn Seung-ho has been sentenced to three years in prison by the Seoul Central District Court for leaking confidential company information.
Ahn, who previously headed Samsung Electronics’ Intellectual Property Center, established Synergy IP, a patent management company, in 2020 after leaving Samsung. He was charged with acquiring internal data from an employee within Samsung Electronics’ IP Center and subsequently utilizing this information in a patent infringement lawsuit filed against his former employer.
The IP Center employee, identified as Lee, was also sentenced to two years in prison for the unauthorized disclosure of company data. An additional employee accused of conspiring with Ahn received a two-year prison sentence, suspended for three years.
“The report obtained by Ahn appears to be the result of significant effort and resources from multiple teams within Samsung Electronics’ Intellectual Property Center, including the technology analysis team,” the court stated in its verdict.
“The defendant caused damage to the company for personal gain by leaking confidential information from a former employer, committing a serious offense that undermines fair market order,” the court added, emphasizing the severity of the breach.
Prosecutors revealed that Ahn collaborated with Tekiya, an audio equipment company, in filing the patent lawsuit. The lawsuit alleged that Samsung Electronics had infringed on patents pertaining to audio recording devices.
However, the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas dismissed the case, citing that Ahn had improperly obtained and utilized confidential materials during the litigation process.
During his tenure at Samsung, Ahn played a crucial role in the company’s patent disputes with Apple, Huawei, and other major tech companies globally. He was also instrumental in securing Samsung’s global patent cross-licensing agreement with Google.
In a related development stemming from the investigation into Ahn, prosecutors also indicted a Samsung Display executive for separate personal misconduct involving leaked data from the IP Center employee, Lee.
The court sentenced the Samsung Display executive to three years in prison and ordered the forfeiture of 533 million won ($367,000).
