Cha Eun-woo Tax Evasion Apology

SEOUL, Jan. 26 (Yonhap) — South Korean singer and actor Cha Eun-woo, currently serving in the military, has issued a public apology addressing recent allegations of substantial tax evasion. He pledged full cooperation with tax authorities in the ongoing investigation.

In a statement posted on his social media accounts, Cha Eun-woo expressed deep remorse over the controversy and committed to diligently adhering to all tax-related procedures moving forward.

“I will humbly accept the final judgment made by the relevant authorities and take full responsibility in accordance with the outcome,” he stated, emphasizing his commitment to accountability.

The apology comes after media reports surfaced indicating that the National Tax Service (NTS) had notified Cha Eun-woo of additional income tax assessments exceeding 20 billion won (approximately US$14 million), leading to allegations of tax evasion. This news quickly sparked public debate and scrutiny of the popular star.

In response to the initial reports, his agency, Fantagio, clarified on Thursday that the matter was still under review and no official notice had been definitively issued. This statement marks the first personal address of the issue by Cha Eun-woo since the allegations arose.

Cha Eun-woo, 29, enlisted in the Republic of Korea Army in July of the previous year and is currently serving as a member of the military band. In South Korea, all eligible men are obligated to fulfill a mandatory military service period ranging from 18 to 21 months.

Addressing concerns and rumors, Cha Eun-woo explicitly denied claims that his enlistment, which commenced before the tax probe was concluded, was strategically timed to evade scrutiny or impede the investigation.

“My enlistment was not an intentional choice to avoid this controversy,” Cha Eun-woo asserted. “Last year, I reached a point where I could no longer postpone my enlistment, even though the tax investigation was still under way.” He maintains that his enlistment was a scheduled obligation independent of the tax investigation.
