'Hope' Dominates Opening Weekend Box Office

The acclaimed Korean film, “Hope,” dominated the weekend box office, adding 1,504,013 admissions and bringing its total to an impressive 2,129,720 by Sunday. These figures, released by the Korean Film Council, confirm its strong performance on the weekend chart, which tracks admissions from Friday through Sunday.

Achieving a significant milestone, “Hope” surpassed the 2-million admissions mark on Sunday, its fifth day in theaters. This rapid success establishes it as the fastest film to reach this benchmark among all titles released this year, highlighting its instant popularity and critical appeal.

“Hope,” a highly anticipated Korean film, gained international recognition by competing at this year’s prestigious Cannes Film Festival. The thrilling narrative unfolds in the remote coastal town of Hopo, where local police officers and villagers confront a series of escalating events following their encounter with powerful and enigmatic extraterrestrial beings. This captivating plot promises an immersive cinematic experience for audiences.

Director Na Hong-jin, acclaimed for “The Wailing” (2016), makes his much-anticipated return to filmmaking with “Hope” after a decade. The film boasts a truly star-studded international cast, featuring Korean cinema icons Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, and Jung Ho-yeon, alongside renowned Hollywood talents Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, promising powerful performances.

In other significant box office news, the Hollywood animated feature “Minions & Monsters” also enjoyed a robust weekend debut, securing the No. 2 spot. The family-friendly animation garnered 308,576 admissions over the weekend, pushing its total admissions to 374,785.

Further solidifying the international presence, the Hollywood live-action adaptation of “Moana” landed at No. 3, adding 173,555 admissions. Following closely was the highly anticipated “Toy Story 5,” which secured 114,718 admissions, maintaining strong interest among viewers.

Among other notable Korean films performing well, the gripping mystery thriller “The Eyes” achieved the fifth position, while the intense zombie thriller “Colony” ranked seventh. These diverse genre offerings underscore the vibrant landscape of Korean cinema, catering to a wide range of audience preferences.
