College Graduate Unemployment Surges to 5-Year High in Q2

South Korea is currently grappling with a significant challenge in its labor market, as the number of unemployed college graduates has reached a five-year high in the second quarter. This surge, highlighted by recent government data, points to a tightening job market particularly affecting young adults across the nation.

According to the Ministry of Data and Statistics, the count of individuals holding a bachelor’s degree or higher who are currently jobless soared to 481,000 during the April-June period. This represents a notable increase of 39,000 from the figures recorded just a year prior, underscoring the growing difficulties faced by educated job seekers in South Korea.

This alarming statistic marks the highest second-quarter unemployment level for college graduates since 2021, a period when 521,000 graduates were out of work amidst the global COVID-19 pandemic. The current trend suggests a renewed pressure on the South Korean job market, impacting highly educated professionals.

A significant portion of this unemployment crisis is concentrated among the younger demographic. Individuals in their 20s and 30s constitute 64.2 percent of all unemployed people with a university degree or higher, collectively totaling 309,000. This highlights a severe youth unemployment challenge within the educated segment of the population.

An official from the data ministry linked this rising unemployment rate directly to external economic pressures, specifically suggesting that the South Korean labor market experienced significant adverse effects from the Middle East crisis during the second quarter. This indicates a broader economic impact influencing domestic job prospects for graduates.
